OLLA, La. (KNOE) - A bat infestation closes a LaSalle Parish elementary school. The Louisiana Department of Health says Olla Elementary School has been closed since Monday after bats were found in one of the buildings.

Carolyn Bombet, the Chief of Field Operations of the Louisiana Department of Health, says the Parish Manager of LaSalle got a call regarding bats at the school. He then inspected the school on Monday. She says the school then evacuated all personnel and students until further notice.

The Superintendent of LaSalle Parish schools immediately sent a letter out to parents explaining the situation. Superintendent Janet Tullos said students would not be returning to the school until the bats were abated and proper clean-up had been done.

Tullos wrote in part, “Classes will resume Thursday ... classes have been moved from the main building to other locations on campus due to an unforeseen bat problem in the main building. We do not know how long it will take to get the complete problem resolved and are working on backup plans if it takes too long."

Bats make one hell of a mess...I am betting that takes a while to clean up.

Is that a LsSalle Parish school building in that photo? It looks more like 1960’s Cuba.

I know someone who works at that school and teachers and staff have been telling them to do something about the bats for over a year. Superintendant and school board said no. Finally someone who could close the school found out.

Superintendent told the staff of school not to go to the media
Louisiana gonna Louisiana.

They are missing out on a chance to turn this into an educational opportunity.

The pic of that bat isnt in Olla. Louisiana doesnt have bats that big. Mice sized would be about right.

Ill relocate them to my property tomorrow. I'd love some bats to help combat the mosquitoes.
