Do you have kids, Lunch?

The amount of homework assigned since Common Core showed up is staggering. My 2nd grader has had 2 plus hours of homework each night this week, and this is the second week of school.

Now, I think part of the problem is that the teachers don't understand some of the teaching methods used in Common Core, so they are not teaching it properly during the day, and the kids are struggling with it at night. Plus, with the amount of stuff needed to be learned to meet the new standards, there just isn't enough time in the day.

Put another way... kids are learning/seeing things for the first time as homework. This takes what might be 60 min of homework and turns it into 2 hours. This is especially true in math.

As to the OP, all I will say is that once the kid gets older, if he doesn't have the grades, he won't play school sports. So if you need to choose, choose academics and cut back on the sports.

No. But again, BIL in 5th grade that I just helped with HW two nights ago. And there are several teachers in my wife's family. I have a pretty solid grasp of what's going in both in public and private schools. It isn't 3 hours daily. Especially in 5th grade.

What makes up this two hours?

Math is an hour. 3-4 pages of a workbook, plus 3-4 pages of printed sheets with additional problems.

English/Spelling is 45 min. 2-3 pages of workbook questions on the story of the week. Read new short passage every night and answer 1-2 pages of questions. Spelling is 20 words, spell them and know definition.

Religion is about 15 min - worksheets and learning parts of mass.

Science and Social Studies homework is supposed to start after Labor Day, so, I guess time will increase after that.

But like I said, I think a big part of this is her teacher isn't teaching everything during the day, so the kids are learning at home instead of homework being a reinforcement. Perhaps your nephew/neice has a better teacher who can teach everything during the day and not force it on the parents. If the concepts were all learned during the day, homework should not take more than 45 min, tops.

So in just one week, your child has gone through 15-20 pages of a math workbook? How big is this book?

And this is every night you say? 100 words/week.. in 2nd grade?

If this is the case, you have an incredibly shitty second grade teacher. I don't think I had that much work to do in highschool. Something isn't right.

So I don't have to deal with it much this year, but last night I heard a parent say their kid averages 2-3 hours of homework a night, and that's after practice. They struggle to get everything done and the kids in bed for 10.

I can believe it. I've seen it with my oldest at a previous school. Some teachers assign work that they have no idea how long it will take.

We had a teacher that was assigning tons of work and had an additional 40 books that each student had to read by year's end. My kid was a straight A student and was struggling to get everything done after practice. Many late nights prompted a parent-teacher conference. She explained how bright our child was and how she shouldn't have any issues with the additional work. She really was dense and just couldn't believe why we thought it was too much. Finally, other students' parents complained to the principal and the busy work slowed. The 40 books remained and it took my kid who loved reading and turned her into someone who now hates books.

Well, 2 hours of home work sounds about right. Sports from 3:00 to 5:30, then homework from 5:30 to 7:30.

I find that in the same way some people like say things like "oh i work over 60 hours a week, and oh Im just ALWAYS busy with no time", they say things like this.

Reality: They frick around a lot and do not get the shite done, and so yes, in that way they do have 2-3 hours of HW every night because they bullshite for bits and pieces of that time.

Just like they're probably talking for a total of 8 hours next to the water cooler at work, or taking a shite for a total of 3 hours of that week, and then eating lunch, and then just doing other non-thinking tasks. Its just a way to make it sound like their kid is working hard and is "structured".

Doesn’t matter, the asians don’t play sports and only study. Let your kids play sports but make damn sure they study Chinese.

Approx 300 pages, and apparently this is volume 1 of a 2 volume set.

20 words a week, but, they repeat homework with the same 20 words each night, and test on Fridays. For example, every night, they need to write each word 5 times and then write out the definition of the word.

I'm not sure that's the exact description I would use, however, I don't think she's qualified to teach this new Common Core math and english stuff. I think there are a lot of teachers like that.

If the kid is taking 2-3 hours to do homework then something isn't right. Other kids in the class are not taking that long. You may want to tutor that kid after school instead of sending him to football.

I'm with you on this. I always find those "my/their kid spends [insert some amount of time greater than 2 hours] on homework EVERY night" claims very hard to believe.

I went to a private Catholic school that's known to be pretty rigorous, and I AVERAGED probably 45 mins to an hour every night. Some nights a lot more. Some nights none.

I believe claims of doing homework EVERY NIGHT for more than 2 hours are BS.

It happens. To the kids who aren't paying attention in school, have learning disabilities, or who lack motivation.

My kid played 3 sports in HS, graduated with honors and is playing 2 sports in college on a academic scholarship. It's all about priorities.

I don't. I was in honors classes in private school. 3 hours was a light night.

I doubt that's true. I grew up in the catholic school system and having over 20 minutes of homework/studying a night was uncommon. That remained true for high school too. Graduated with over a 4.0 and didn't do shite at home

A bunch of people are full of shite or delusional. They don't want to admit their kids are masturbating, trying to figure out how to get laid, and smoking weed when they are allegedly studying.

Every now and again I hear my mom say how much time I spent studying and doing homework when I was in high school. Truth is, I was either drinking beer, trying to get laid, or smoking weed and drinking coffee at CC's on bluebonnet.
