Yeah, it’s fake, but it was cool.
As to your question, my dad divorced mom in 1974 and bought a one truck plumbing and electric business in Franklinton, LA. Twice in two weeks he was north of town and ran out of gas. He was able to coast downhill for a mile or so and make it to the same gas station, where the same attendant was sitting there laughing the second time.

Fake, he just cut truck off to be able to do that perfectly.
If it really happened he wouldn’t have had time to get his phone out to record. You don’t coast long enough to do that, it would be a quick decision and move

I ran out on interstate and coasted up a ramp and into a gas station in 1992. Saved me from a wife fussing.

This actually happened to me twice. It was right after buying my truck, and I did not know that the gas gauge was a quarter off. I literally rolled in the gas station each time. Needless to say, I learned my lesson and haven’t done it since.
