A customer of mine who is a true OT Baller has one under his weekend house. Configured like a 16 seat home theater, wine cellar ,eating area, and two small bunk rooms. I see lots of safe rooms in Mississippi. I know it is a requirement to build a safe room in North Mississippi with new construction, not sure if it is statewide.

Unless you are in Dixie Alley or on the Coast; it probably wouldn't be worth the investment.

Kind of like bomb shelters of the late 50’s into the 60’s?.

Truth be told, I know you're totally right. If it was just me, I'd give it a hard pass. But between my wife and three little ones, a $6,500 bad weather "insurance policy" isn't gonna break me. Peace of mind is worth a lot when shite hits the fan....and even when it doesn't.

Looking at that pic....is the rim around the entry raised all the way around? It's a good feature, if so, as it would divert water away. I've seen some that are totally flush and that would concern me with rain or a busted water supply nearby.

If I was designing my home I would take a larger interior room (probably the master closet) and construct it out if reinforced concrete just to be safe. Basically create an above ground safe room.

DuPont actually offers something like this that can be made into pretty much whatever kind of room you want: DuPont StormRoom

It's pretty cool.

I just built a new house. We put in an above ground storm shelter.

It was about $4500 installed.

Survive A Storm

These guys are awesome. I would highly recommend them.
I figured this could do double duty for hurricanes as well with the tornado threat. It was worth every penny for the peace of mind.

That Dupont room is pretty badass.

Pair it with an emergency generator/ automatic switch system.

Then just turn it into the ultimate mancave/theater room for when it's not being utilized for emergencies.

And the owners were probably at work, children at school...

All schools were closed that day, along with most businesses.
Not sure what your point was.

You could use it in the event of a scary dust devil.

There is no such requirement

I’d go with one of the above ground steel ones personally. I’ve been seeing more people install them in their garage.

That's good. I didn't notice them mention the feature when I looked up their stuff some time ago.
