This is Daniel Shaver from many years ago. And no, no one backed the LEO on this.

If you are ever in a police standoff, your best chance of survival is to pretend to pass out.

Following their confusing instructions will get you killed.

He did exactly what they told him NOT to do, reach behind his back.

The LEO forced him into playing a deadly game of Simon Says and gave him a set of instructions that forced Shaver into a physically untenable situation where it is easy to get unbalanced and instinctively move you hands backwards. That murder was completely avoidable within any significant increase in danger to the police officers.

I remember when this came out and how pissed off everybody was about how avoidable it was. That cop was trying to explain things clearly but was as confusing as possible.

“Put your hands up and fall on your face if you have to fall…keep your hands up at all times….now crawl to me.”

Like what the frick? This wasn’t some criminal intentionally disobeying and being violent and confrontative at all. I don’t care if he was black, white, brown, whatever. That was egregiously bad by the cop.

Cop should be in jail for manslaughter.

The sad but honest truth is the average human is not smart, and cops, as a whole, are below average intelligence

Add to the fact that people usually involved with cop interactions are also below average intelligence, encounters are mixing gas and fire

Crawling on all fours leads you to have to put your hand behind your back?

I agree it was a shite situation all the way around. The cops were aggressive with commands that were at times confusing/given out of order and they could’ve cuffed him with out having him crawl towards them.

Shaver was clearly told not to reach behind him. That order was crystal clear.

I didn't know it until this week, but the cop that pulled the trigger just got fired from a place that my company contracts with. He worked there for maybe a year or so. I remember seeing this video when this blew up back in 2016, but I didn't recognize his name until one of my coworkers brought it up.
Live look at me when I found out:

Was he reaching when he got plugged?

Cop should be arrested and CO should be fired.

Who the frick commands a crawl with no hands with bullets as the punishment for actually crawling?

Did the bodycam footage from any of the other officers get released? Tough to see exactly what movement the guy made that made them open fire. Didn’t look like much, but it wasn’t a crawling motion.

I suppose that’s why the released that video. Tough to see exactly what happened with the gun i the way.

Why was the protocol not to go slap cuffs on them while they laid down? Because they were worried someone else was in the room?

Why have him crawl at all? Guy was intoxicated.
wiki link

Looks like the guy who shot him had previous issues.

Okay so I watched the video and he very briefly reached around his waist I think to pull his pants up, but by the time they started firing at him his hands were already back in front of him.

I just regret they even asked him to crawl. I assume they were afraid to approach him, because someone else could be at the door with a gun? I still wish they had just ordered him to lay flat on the ground and put his hands behind his back while another could go detain him.

Because they wanted to make the situation as stressful as possible for the victim in hope they could murder him. Job well done, boys. High five.
