A video from a Spanish hospital captures the moment a baby is born within the amniotic sac, an occurrence that only happens 1 in every 80,000 births. It is also known as a "caul birth" (the caul is the membrane which covers the foetus).

Like a puppy... need to let mom bite it open.

It's crazy. It's more crazy thinking that my wife has two of those things in her right now (34 weeks with twin girls).

I can see how this could happen outside of a hospital, but wtf wouldn't the doc or nurse have burst the sac manually? My wife was induced both times so the doc did that to induce labor faster? Seems odd to me?

Amazing.
This occur vaginally or caesarian?

Natural.
quote:
Medieval Europeans considered caul birth a sign of good luck, and thought the caul meant the child was destined for greatness—if the caul was red or white; a black caul was sometimes associated with bad luck.
quote:
While there is no reason today to hold to these kinds of superstitions, it is worth noting that some very influential and important people have been born with a caul, including:
Charlemagne
Napoleon
Liberace
Lord Byron
Sigmund Freud
Not all folklore about cauls treats them in such a positive manner, however; Romanians once believed that a baby born with a caul would become a vampire after death, even if the person lived a long time. A Hungarian folk saying has it that “He who is born in the cloak dies on the rope.”

Did the baby live?
Yep. Umbilical cord still attached.

Maybe it's just me....but the baby looks at least somewhat aware of what's happening outside that sac.

I have a few questions.
Was this video taken with the expectant mothers/family permission?
Is it OK because it happens so rarely?
I only ask because a friend works in the ER and recently showed me some pretty damn graphic things on his phone. They were kind of awesome.
