Automobile prep for the cold

All of the talk about prepping our houses got me thinking about my cars.
If you're like me, when your windshield wiper fluid runs low, you simply top it off with water. Maybe even use some store-bought stuff.
But unless it is rated as a de-icer, you may be in for some unpleasantness. I recommend any cars kept out of a garage be run to empty and refilled with the deicer, running it all through the hoses.
also, at least top off your antifreeze with some of the pure non-diluted stuff. Unfortunately, newer cars don't have a traditional radiator cap where you could empty some if needed to get adequate concentration of antifreeze, I'm not even sure how you would remove enough just from the overflow tank to make a difference if starting with a low concentration.
Good luck!

It’s not going to be 30 below.

No, but below freezing for about 36 hours. And down to 15 at one point. Antifreeze is probably less concerning than the windshield wiper fluid if yours, like mine, was pure water
I have had personal experience with that. Cracked reservoir. Ruptured hoses. Put a 5 gallon bucket of water outside see what it looks like thursday.

It’s not going to be cold enough for any of that shite in Louisiana. You’re recommending people start swapping coolant because it’ll be cold for 2 days? Insane.
Maybe plug in your diesel if you need to, make sure your battery is charged, but otherwise everyone will be just fine.

It’s going to be below freezing temps for like 30 hours

The slow panic here is something to see.

You either have an adequate concentration of antifreeze or you don't. At the temperatures we're describing, I would bet almost all are more than adequately concentrated. But If not, the only way to amend is remove some and add more.
The windshield wiper fluid is certainly a more easily addressable issue. And more likely to be under-protected
I would imagine any auto parts store would be willing to come out and check your concentration for you if you are concerned. If you have a slow radiator leak and periodically top off with water, this could conceivably be an issue. Otherwise, i agree, probably Overkill / overthinking. I did not recommend doing so blindly

If you have crappy tires, don't get on the road
Posted on 1/20/25 at 10:46 am to luvdoc
Thinking that at the least, auto starting everything 4-5 hours and letting run for the 10 mins or so should help counter the temps.

This is the biggest concern
People that don't take care of their tires.
Some of those people post here. I added some air this morning in prep. Normally run 38 psi. The cold today had me down to 35 across the board. Pumped em up to 40 psi

People will be playing golf by Friday when it’s 60 out. It really is pathetic

People with broken plumbing because they didn't take simple preventative steps will be warm but won't be playing golf.

I am in NJ and find that unnecessary you just need the store bought blue that goes to negative 20

Also in the south if your windshield is ice the road is so you don't need to be driving
That said put the boys stuff in so your fluid tank doesn't freeze and crack

Regular windshield antifreeze will suffice. If we get prolonged snow and other precip, I'd stay off the roads because there is little budget to salt and sand roads, especially long overpasses.

You will know in day or two if you needed and new battery for your car.
