I see the commercials all the time - Allstate, State Farm, Progressive - everyone seems to have one now.

Any OT baws using these? I can't help but think of all the data mining the auto carriers are using this for.

I use my phone while driving all the time. Somehow I usually end up losing money

I don't have one because I don't want to pay $2,000/month for auto insurance.

that’s my thought. I’d rather pay my current rates with them blind versus what they’d charge me if they knew how I really drove.

I could sure use insurance. Some fig on the interstate slowed down and caused me to bump him after the Saints game.

Most are filed with the state as discount only, meaning they can’t use the data to increase your rate. Our average discount is 12% with drive safe and save

Yeah but I'm sure they can drop you or at least not renew you

I find that extremely hard to believe. One way or another, your rate is affected.

They’re not collecting that data for nothing.

But can use to deny a claim when you're driving "reckless"

I really don’t care what you want to believe. It’s the truth. Check the rate filing.

I would think the point is to make people more conscientious drivers, thus reducing the chance of having to pay a claim. They save thousands with less claims and pass a small bit to the “safer” drivers being careful.

Complete bullshite right here.
Progressive can 100% raise rates with it. We don’t offer any of it at my agency. We used to with “Rightrack” from Safeco, but they switched to an app on your phone, so we no longer offer it. Plug in devices are great, but all carriers are going to an app.

FWIW, the future of auto insurance is, and should be in my opinion, usage based. The plug ins and apps measure basically four things:
A) Avg speed
B) Miles driven
C) “Hard braking”, defined as slowing more than 10 mph down/second
D) Time of day driven

Travelers is testing a “charge per mile” program in some states in 2020, and I agree with it. Like, I drive 3 miles to work per day, and rarely leave the Gulf Shores/Orange Beach area. Why should someone like myself be paying the same rates as someone who commutes 30 miles per day on the interstate?

Carriers are slowly (some more slowly than others) realizing data is king, and the ones who evolve the quickest will garner their fair share of the market.

Fun fact: The world spends $2.1 trillion on insurance premiums/year. There is a race underway to evolve insurance, and the State Farm’s of the world will be like MySpace in the next coming decades.

I said most. State Farm’s is filed as a discount, as is geico’s
