19 deaths in 7 years. How many would be too many?
One is too many, but not justification to disband the greek system. But the discussion was about it being "rare" or not.
The vast, vast majority of greek organizations in the US have no issues, do great things for the community, and are a net positive.
Group punishment is asinine.
ETA: and by "group punishment" I mean disbanding the greek system. No issues with removing the offending fraternity from campus and banning them for life.

Yep. The Parade Ground on Saturdays is a perfect example of this. Every weekend it's absolute insanity that didn't exist 3-5+ years ago.
When I was growing up, you would see beer trucks in front of houses. Later as a student, the rules altered the landscape, but much was similar. There was, however, enough sense of decorum or even just pride that kept it in hand.
The parade grounds just looks like a trashy free for all. Cast boy sums it up. Society has just turned trashy, all walks of life. Everyone will lose freedoms and rights when people can't act right and cause events that can't be ignored. That freak student life lady will now act like she was proven right. Tailgating will change.
Ben Wynn seems like yesterday. This event will not go down lightly. The drug use amongst Greeks is already alarming - something of a rarity in the 80's, save for a few outliers. Change is coming. Prayers to the family.

What happens if the dropped pledge has bigger and more friends at the bar?
Frat members like to get all tribal and shite. Over a bunch of words and giving each other handjobs.

I stated this opinion recently and pretty much got attacked for it...
But I'm saying it again. Fraternities are a huge waste of time and money. They are all bullshite. Just go and get your education, frick all of that nonsense.

Group punishment is how the retards who run education punish students from kindergarten through college. Its amazing that those in education are often the most ignorant.

Annual United States Road Crash Statistics
Over 37,000 people die in road crashes each year
An additional 2.35 million are injured or disabled
Over 1,600 children under 15 years of age die each year
lets band driving while we are at it. that is over 100 people a day, 4 people per hour, a person every 15 mins.

You can still see the DKE burnt into my friends chest, 11 years later. Silly.
Getting your greek letters tattoed on your ankle was a thing for a while when I was an undergrad. Glad I didn't fall for it. I thought it was cool at the time. Now, not so much.

I can see you were definitely not Greek.

Meh. I imagine for someone going out of state for school, it's the best way to meet new people.

Well, if there are 3 or more Fraternity Members in the car, then it is a Fraternity Event.

Any stats available that show how many non-greek students die from alcohol poisoning?
That's not the way the stats were positioned. They're specifically linked to hazing. I'm sure the amount of fraternity members who die in alcohol related accidents is much higher than this each year, for instance.

Ya, ours was to have our crest tattooed on the inner ankle (so it could be covered by socks for professional appearance reasons). Also glad I didn't do it.

I was never hazed. We never hazed my entire time in school. Neither did the other fraternities.
Neither was I. The only "hazing" we had to do were non-violent things like guarding the tailgating set up overnight, giving actives rides whenever, cleaning the house. We were never forced to drink alcohol or any of the other absurd other fraternities do. It actually made the pledge class closer and bond in all of these times. That is effective "hazing."

I'm not in Phi Delt so I don't know what they do. But the reason a pledge is usually dropped is because he won't do what actives tell him to do.
So to me it sounds like they were hazing, and the kid didn't want to do it so they dropped him. When he told his parents why he was dropped, his parents threatened to go to LSU and nationals with hazing allegations. So they took him back. Then he had to chug everclear as punishment.
