I agree with Rummel, while I can see how someone misses the Austin of old and longs for there misspent youth, I like the changes that are happening. But then again I'm more yuppie and probably part of the problem.

I think back on the eight years I have been here and I like the change. The culinary scene is leaps and bounds above what it was ten years ago. The entertainment is better with more choices for each type of group. (Dirty six, west six, 4th and 5th, Rainey street, the Domain, Top Golf, South Congress, Burnett Road, Brewery's all over the place, jester King, deep eddy distillery etc.) This has all happened in the last 8 to 10 years.

The economy is better then ever. (Wages do need to come up) Downtown is vibrant and busy. The same outdoor activities people used to like are still here and there have many additional trails, green belts, etc built. I think there have been five or six new mountain bike trails built since I've been here alone.

All in all many people here now wouldn't have fit Into old Austin, but Austin now has options for all types.

I'm in the same area. A big part of the price jump is the shortage of in town houses for sale. Most people that are here don't want to sell and so there are bidding wars over the stuff that does come on the market. I'm glad I bought 15 years ago. I couldn't afford to buy here now.

I'm in the Lower Greenville area. Crazy how much houses are going for compared to 2-3 years ago when I bought. Same goes with North Dallas. My friend bought her house 3 years ago in North Dallas and listing it for almost $100k more than what she paid. I thought about selling but I can't see myself paying that much to stay in the area (don't plan on leaving the area) so I'm going to hold onto my place for now.

I live in Austin and I agree with that. Lake Travis & Barton Springs gives Austin a huge (+) in the outdoors category but thats about it

I guess it really depends on what you like to do outdoors.

If you like Hunting and Fishing, the opportunities within 2-4 hours of Houston are pretty unreal. World class duck, deer, quail, dove hunting. Fishing opportunities within the same distance equally as impressive. Offshore fishing will take you a bit longer to get there than say venice/fourchon.

I live in downtown Houston and it's cheap as shite compared to other cities. I pay $1400/month for a 1000sq ft loft, am 2 blocks from Minute Maid Park, 5 blocks from the Toyota Center, and walking distance to work and tons of bars and restaurants. I don't know any other city you can experience all those things for less.

Without question. I was just referring to mainly the Austin area.

my favorite place to go out, but I am afraid the developers will replace the bungalow bars with condos.

I do agree with everything people said about Austin. Way too overinflated, and companies pay way less than average using the excuse, 'you get to live in Austin'. I loved living there for all the nearby lakes but unless you're in your 20s, maybe early 30s there really is not a whole lot of appeal as far as the city stuff is. And I'm a huge sports fan. Austin was prob the worst 'sports town' I've ever lived in.

Fort Worth is probably legit in that claim though. Certainly feels like the last true Texas city of any size to me.

The vibe of Houston and Dallas haven't really changed that much. They've grown but the general attitudes of people are still the same

To me Fort Worth has always been the only true Cowtown in Texas though, if that's what people are referring to

Yeah Ft. Worth is great, if I had to live in a big city it's the one I'd pick.

Austin has all of those outdoor features except good duck hunting and its a longer drive to the coast. The Hill Country is icing on the cake.

Hunting is undoubtedly not lacking in Texas. But, in comparison to the cities we've talked about to compare Dallas/Houston to (Nashville and Atlanta, mostly), it probably still lacks the outdoor diversity.

For example, nobody will have a problem finding hunting, fishing, fly fishing, hiking, kayaking, etc. opportunities within a few hours of Nashville. Getting to the coast is a haul, less so for Atlanta. For me, Atlanta is ideal considering there is a cold water fishery running through the middle of it, solid hunting, solid freshwater fishing, mountains w/in 2 hrs and good coastline within 5-6 hours in two directions.

I'd tell you to shoot me an email about that house, but I'd opt for death before living in kingwood

Austinites are elitists. Their town is better because they tell everyone it is better. I mean it is the "Live Music Capitol of the World"

Fort Worth has a great music scene and seems to be what everyone based their opinion of Austin on (15-20 years ago)

...and Central Texas.

I agree. I miss the proximity to things that I had in Atlanta. I do love the mountains... And, while the coast isn't that far away from Austin, I don't really care for the beach. I'd prefer to be in the mountains.

Too conservative to be the next Austin though, right?

Fort Worth also has by far the best downtown of any of the major TX cities. Not full of disgusting bums and tourists like Austin and SA and not gigantic business parks like Dallas and Houston

Austin has been ruined and it will never be what it once was, but they asked for it so I have little sympathy, I do however miss the old blend of cowboy, gypsy, hillbilly, hippe, punk, that it used to be. RIP

Could replace Nashville with Austin in that statement and the exact same would apply.

Be careful what you ask for.
