Apparently, some right wing folks do it too.

HOUMA – At a 4th of July celebration, an upside-down American flag displayed by a Tea Party group ignites furor.
In front of a downtown home, a flag flies at half-staff, as a protest against the Obama administration.
On a busy east-Houma street, a flag flies upside down as a symbol of distress caused by the BP oil spill. ...

quote:

...Local members of the conservative, populist-based Tea Party movement displayed an upside-down American flag at an informational booth set up during the 4th of July celebration at the Houma-Terrebonne Civic Center. The display was challenged by Roger Songe, a Houma resident and member of the United Veterans League. ,,,

quote:

...Rules for American flag display are included in the U.S. Code and were adopted during President Franklin D. Roosevelt’s administration. One section says “no disrespect should be shown to the flag ... The flag should never be displayed with the union down, except as a signal of dire distress in instances of extreme danger to life or property.“ ...

I remember there being a scene in a movie, or maybe a TV show, where younger guy, who was a veteran, was doing this and he told an older guy, that had been a military officer, he should know it's a sign of distress. That was my first time hearing it. It was probably a Vietnam War movie.

It’s a sure sign that you missed an important day of third grade social studies when they went over the way to fly the flag when in distress.

Upside-down is the only way I'd fly that flag in 2020. Who even identifies with it anymore? That country is burnt toast.

That might be something you learn in high school civics. Probably more like Boy Scouts or something. Maybe even boot camp.

It's definitely not taught in third grade social studies. Do you realize how confusing that would be to a 7-year-old today?

"If you are ever 'in distress' (whatever that means), and somehow randomly have access to an American flag and the ability to control how that flag is publicly displayed, this is what you should do..."

Do you love it? Do you love John Roberts, RBG, AOC, $600 weekly handouts for loafers, the government-military complex, and the wars it perpetrates in places its leaders know nothing of? Do you love Biden, Trump, Mitt Romney, and John McCain? Advertisements about Bob Dole's limp pecker?

Do you love hashtags? How about Disney shows where sarcastic kids live in a hotel or cruise ship or submarine or whatever? Do you love the $10,000,000,000,000 "Dubya" and Obama printed right into bank vaults?

No, I don't love the USA. I love Louisiana, Mississippi, Georgia, and Alabama. The rest of it is something I'd rather appreciate from behind a wall, and a wall more like the one in Berlin than any Trump fence.

It baffles me how some of you grow into what should be adulthood but yet still don’t know simple shite such as the meaning of an upside down American flag.
