A group of us came down from Birmingham a few weeks later to help with recovery. It started with a small group of guys, maybe 3-5 that had worked with a missions agency doing recovery before. Word spread, and I think about 20 of us ended up coming. Sleeping on cots for a long weekend in a church gym. They were partnering with local church members to assist with clean up and recovery. By the time we got down there a few weeks later, it was mostly hanging new drywall in a handful of houses, or at least that is what we were assigned to. I had a nice talk with this older gentleman who looked to be tough as nails, but he broke down crying and kept thanking us for helping them out.

We got it pretty bad here in Acadiana but not as bad as BR. Thankfully, my house is pretty high up on pier and beams so it never got to my doorstep. My two vehicles at the time(Canyon, Expedition) were also high(er) so no water in my vehicles either. We got lucky. My in laws outdoor kitchen he just built for the 2nd time flooded and had to rebuild.

If you lived in an area where which is not a flood zone isn’t flood insurance just a few hundred a year? Why wouldn’t you buy it?

I remember it like it was yesterday. Was traveling back to Baton Rouge from Dallas to start my final year of grad school. All of our stuff was in a condo at Lake Beau Pre and nobody knew what the water situation there was like (but knew it wasn't near as bad as the rest of the city).

Spent the first few weeks of class helping other students and faculty clean out their flooded homes.

Crazy that this was 9 years ago. It still feels like it was just a few months ago.

I spent so much time helping other people thinking that our house was going to be ok. Just to get right under 4 feet in the house when it was all said and done.

I remember how much of an "expert" I became at forecasting river gauges. I warned a few people that they needed to prepare but they laughed me off only to call a few hours later asking for help. Crazy times.

I'll never forget having to go check on things in a boat for a while and then cleaning out the house. Protip: fridges can be cleaned, but is it worth it?

It's a psychological marvel on the head trip of seeing almost everything you own in a 6 foot pile in front of the house.

I was dating a trashy little woman who lived in central at the time and had stayed at her place the night before the flood waters came. We had to evacuate and got stranded at the middle school shelter for 2 days before we could get out of Central. We would go sit in my truck a couple times a day just to get some AC for a little while and charge our phones. We would always end up having secks in the school parking lot. Other than that small detail, it was a horrible experience.

South Louisiana has had it rough the past 20 years. Between these floods and the hurricanes…. I still can’t figure out why we all still choose to live here.

So he evacuated to my house...

Then we watched the water creep down the street. Then up the yard...then to the porch.

Remind me to never let that guy evacuate to my house

I remember people in trucks telling me I couldn't go down streets I've lived around my whole life. Made me realize how many foreigners moved in.
