The operator who puts the car in self-driving mode? The company who manufactures the car? That's the main issue.

That's an interesting thought. Would such automation then act to shift the financial burden of the car accident to the manufacturer rather than the driver? That could be a good thing for the little guy's insurance rates.

But, I'd imagine driverless cars would come with a war between insurance and auto manufacturer lobbies for legislation pinning the bill for these wrecks on the other.

Factory financing option from the manufacturer for "warranty" against this thing. Basically the manufacturer is going to be the insurance company you pay to insure you are covered if their product fails.

autoblog link about Volvo doing so

Btw, Louisiana residents are fricked anyway. When is the last time you saw a properly marked roadway? You will still be driving everywhere but the interstate.

Interesting. I would expect the existing auto insurance companies to contract with the manufacturers, providing coverage to the manufacturers instead of individuals.

I wonder if there are any stats out there on potential damage caused by autonomous vehicles. I would imagine a decrease in overall number of accidents, but I wonder if there will be an increase in serious accidents/injuries.

I've seen one person sue for $50k in the scenario i described, and they got a little under $8k and had zero damage to their car.
I saw another guy sue for over $400k b/c the 18 wheeler that totalled the lady behind my wifes car, and my wifes car, made those two cars run into the car in front of my wife, which bumper tapped the first guy and had no damage, and since he was a 20 year old disabled veteren, still not sure what the disability is, and an 18 wheeler was involved, he sued for over $400k and walked away with just over $100k.

Had i known how easy it was to be a piece of shite and get money for nothing, we could have sued as well and actually had more of a legitimate shot at suing than the asshat that did sue, but we aren't pieces of shite.

I imagine tires will still blowout, people will neglect maintaining their vehicles, and as stated before road conditions will require most places still remain human controlled.

There will be fewer accidents, but insurance companies will just raise their rates. Since insurance will remain mandatory, you are fricked.

Now she wants to get Payyyyed!!

Siblings talk about how they "did all the work" like it is some huge badge of honor, when really they appear like they did it just for the payoff in the end.

There is no honor in that.

Here's why it's gonna be awhile before we all drive smart cars

quote:

A self-driving car being tested by Google struck a public bus on a Silicon Valley street, a fender-bender that appears to be the first time one of the tech company's vehicles caused an accident during testing on city roads.

Granted it was just a mild fender bender, but the point stands.

quote:

While the report does not address fault, in a written statement Google said, "We clearly bear some responsibility, because if our car hadn't moved there wouldn't have been a collision." The statement called the incident "a classic example of the negotiation that's a normal part of driving - we're all trying to predict each other's movements."

You think the insurance company just gave the guy $100,000 without having him be seen by a doctor of their choosing?

What good would that do?
One lawyers doctor says he's hurt.
the other lawyers doctor says he isn't.
He said she said. and he's a retired disabled veteren that played his card.
18 wheeler company probably has well over a million dollar insurance policy. To the lawyers and judges involved, they're just taking a little cash from the insurance company, not the 18 wheeler company, so it's not like they are making the 18 wheeler company actually pay for anything. they look at it as this is what insurance is for.

You think these rules would reduce litigation? (the first is more or less the way it works now, by the way). Quite the opposite. It's just more things to sue about.

I am executor for both parents (divorced). I almost want to be removed after hearing horror stories.

Creating more rules doesn't mean more efficient enforcement. It's quite the opposite. We need to reform our judicial system first.

So you're not a doctor, did not examine the guy, did not read any doctors' reports on the guy, but you're using it as evidence of a broken system anyway?

100% agreed that vehicle insurance companies and law enforcement will fight this with everything they've got because they know their very existence mostly depends on the dollars spent in the name of safety. These industries champion themselves as advocates of safety, yet they will spend hundreds of millions of dollars over the next decade trying to thwart progress that could save countless lives. That being said, autonomous vehicles have the backing of some very wealthy investors. I'll use the Uber example....while it took a while, they were able to get Uber into most major cities across the United States regardless of the taxi cab lobby against it. One of the only reasons Uber has seen success is because Uber had the backing of Google's billions. Guess who is leading the fight for autonomous vehicles?

The taxi cab industry lobbying is nothing compared to the insurance industry. Throw in personal injury and insurance defense attorneys along with law enforcement and getting Uber approved is really a cakewalk in comparison autonomous vehicles.

Uber beat the taxi industry, but is already losing to the insurance industry lobby. Look at how many municipalities and states are requiring Uber to match or exceed taxi insurance requirements for their drivers. Uber wanted to piggyback on their driver's personal policies when they don't have a passenger, but that was shut down in CA as well as other states. Many insurers are also canceling personal policies or refusing to pay out when a person is driving for hire.

The Uber battle is nothing compared to widespread autonomous vehicles.
