Paul Pierce "The Truth" coined by Shaq:
quote:

Late one night some 9 years ago, it took the Big Chairman of the Board just a moment to launch a nickname that would become Paul Pierce’s brand … Shaq was finishing up with a few reporters when he spotted the Boston writer and broke away from his pack. He then launched into a complimentary rant about Pierce, squeezing in his favorite maternal expletive between ‘The’ and ‘Truth.’ Pulling a reporter aside, he shook his head and said, ‘Paul Pierce.’ Paul Pierce what? Leaning toward the notepad, he said, ‘Take this down. My name is Shaquille O’Neal, and Paul Pierce is the motherfricking truth. Quote me on that, and don’t take nothing out. I knew he could play, but I didn’t know he could play like this. Paul Pierce is the truth.’

My favorite was always Irvin Johnson's "Magic". From Wiki: quote:Johnson was first dubbed "Magic" as a 15-year-old sophomore playing for Everett High School, when he recorded a triple-double of 36 points, 18 rebounds and 16 assists.[3] After the game, Fred Stabley Jr., a sports writer for the Lansing State Journal, gave him the moniker[20] despite the belief of Johnson's mother, a Christian, that the name was sacrilegious.[3]

That's similar to Carnell "Cadillac" Williams. When he was in High School a local reporter in Birmingham gave him the nickname "Cadillac" because he said he "runs as smooth as a Cadillac".

I remember when it first came out that Magic had aids... there was the joke..

"Did you hear David Copperfield has AIDS?"

"Are you serious?"

"Yes, they say he got it because he did Magic."
