Reading the post & responses below about Kiran Chawla, no matter our thoughts on the matter, at will employment very likely gives Ms. Chawla few, if any, options regarding her termination.

At-will means that an employer can terminate an employee at any time for any reason, except an illegal one, or for no reason without incurring legal liability.

Using an absurd example, if WAFB suddenly decides that all investigative reporters must be at least 5' 10" tall, under that policy, Kiran, or any other investigative reporter, can be terminated for not meeting the standard.

Is it moral? No
Is it ethical? No
Is it legal? Unfortunately, Yes

Was it ever discovered why she was terminated? I thought it was all speculation.

Can they say all reporters must be white/blonde/sexy AF, with a tight arse and huge rack?

Because that’s what I want. Those are my demands. I will await their response from the comfort and safety of my house.

You realize private business is in the business of making money, right? It's purpose is not to provide a living wage.

At-will employment does not supersede employment discrimination laws. So depending on the facts, it’s not that simple.

Employee can quit their job at any point
Employer can terminate an employees job at any point

I don't see the problem.

Is the same true for only hiring whites.... because it is the same situation you set up.

Her contract wasn’t renewed.

It is always moral but sometimes ethical. You cannot tell private enterprise who to fire and hire. That is their decision. Sometimes the decision is unethical but we are in no place to legislate that.

Bayou Bandit 24, please notice I said that a person can be terminated for practically any reason, except an illegal one. An employer in violation of defined discrimination laws would fall into that "illegal" category.

All this is moot if she was under contract. Simply not renewing contract does not fall under these laws.
