Probably has to do with a drop in testosterone as well, at least for men. Things do change as you age - sex drive, metabolism etc. It's not some drastic fall off for most though and can regulated fairly easily.
Those hormonal changes make it more difficult to maintain muscle mass. That's why your muscle mass decreases as you age if you don't actively try to counteract it.

A good amount of it is your mentality and habits. I never stopped working out after high school. Moreso vanity back then, but, nowadays my performance as a human in all facets is noticeably better when I exercise and eat well.
My median hasn't changed in roughly 10 years. I'll be in a bit better shape during the warmer months and a bit thicker during the winter months.
Goal is to workout 4-5 a week, eat very clean Monday-Thursday, and have at it on the weekends as far as fattier foods and alcohol.
Cutting sugar and carbs is the hardest and most necessary thing to do to see any long-term results. If I go without those, it's almost impossible not to lose weight.
If you spend your entire life doing something, your body will maintain with it. Trying to "get in shape" when you've been an idle potato for a decade is an enormously difficult task, and it's easy to see why people quit despite the best intentions. Shoot, if I go a week without physical activity the next week is a noticeable uphill climb.
Truly think that if people committed to doing even the little things - they'd be in great shape. America's diet and lifestyle is pretty gross, and the fact that it's commonplace is troubling.

Its gradual but I noticed in my 60s. Stop eating greasy and sweet foods near bedtime. Tums, Tums, Tums.
I don't need Tums but can only eat one medium sized meal a day beginning at just after 60. also, my largest meal of the day is at noon. Sometimes I forget to eat anything for dinner and usually a sandwich at most.

45 but only because I had a herniated disc at 42 and stopped being active. Before that I was extremely active and could eat/drink anything and not have my weight fluctuate at all. Took about 3 years of piss poor activity for my body to eventually slow down.

If you keep up with steady cardio (about 30 mins a day) and eat halfway decent, it won't slow down as much as you might think.

I started running 12-15 miles a week 6 months ago. I now weigh 8 pounds more with no noticeable change to my diet.

At 33 mine is faster now than when I was in college.
I also don’t eat fast food everyday or drink every night, and I work out way more.
I’m at that age where I see people I knew in college that were in shape and now they’re straight up fat.
