Wife and I bought a new SUV this weekend and both my family and her family asked how much we paid for it. It’s not a big deal but it’s more of the principal than anything to me. I don’t like to tell people that kind of information because it’s just not anyone’s business. My family accepted not being told like adults and just dropped it. The in laws pressed and pressed then got petty and told my wife that they inherited a lot of Exxon stock and that it would go to her and her siblings when their dad dies but wouldn’t tell her how much it is because she didn’t tell them what we paid for the damn car.

Am I wrong for thinking that’s both tacky and petty as hell?

My brother in law asked me so many questions that I just went and got him the window sticker out the glove box.

I put down $3,500 for my Ford F850 and have set up a 350 month payment plan.

Once I get this badboy, gonna be living in the left lane of an interstate or freeway near you, rollin' 74 in a 70.

Respond with "more than you could afford" and report back to us from the fallout

I generally agree but this is our families and the problem is if they knew, they’d tell others like gossipy 13 year old girls. They’re also very old school and would shite a brick if they knew how much the monthly note is because the car cost more than their first homes

Tacky, but you missed an opportunity to make your in laws melt by telling them you way overpaid

I mean, I talk money on vehicles with my dad but that is to help him get a good deal. He is a bit of a sucker when it comes to pay retail...

Tacky in the situation you described with family.

Now if it's just you and your buddies and one of them is asking for reasons including buying one like it, that's not tacky. Or if you approach it like "y'all wouldn't believe the deal I got on this, isn't it awesome and/or good looking!?" - also not tacky to ask in that situation

I don't think it's tacky for family to politely ask out of curiosity like - "you don't have to tell me if it's prying, but how much was it? SUV prices seem nuts these days"

I wouldn't think twice about it with any family I'm reasonably close to. I mean, they visit your house, they see your stuff, they probably know how you're doing.

I don’t care if I bought a Pinto. It’s still tacky.

with this market people are trying to make sense of the used car market that makes no sense so i wouldnt let it bug me

i just bought an 04 silverado with 112k miles on it for $6k

i got a great deal considering the average price for trucks with low miles like that is $8-$9k

So how much did you pay for it?
What kind?
Or how much off MSRP did you they come off?

I don't think I've ever asked someone how much they paid for anything. If they talk about getting something I'm not really familiar with I might ask if it was affordable/expensive but not "how much did you pay for that?"
