So, making jokes about people's lives getting ruined by catastrophic floods is the thing to do now

MJ, a couple of issues with a Ford van. 4.6l
Is there a common fix for door handle cables that come out of the handle? Like a snap-on sleeve?
Also, should the engine sound like a vacuum cleaner at higher rpms?

Ask a mechanic a question
You do know if you jack your car up in the rear, it will get better MPG's because it's always going downhill. Also chrome valve covers and oil pans cause your motor to run hotter. That's a few I know.

Awesome thread MJ.
2004 Jeep TJ. Replaced brake pads last year around this time. Slight squeal when braking at low speeds, or if I'm going over 40 or so, when I brake down to around 20 it starts. It did it at first when the pads were new but went away. Started back again a few months ago. Function is fine I'd just like to rid myself of the squeal.

You're not paying just for the tool. You're paying the mechanic for his expertise and time in diagnosing the problem.
You are talking about paying for a service, which is why I go to a mechanic. I am talking about paying for a tool that tells a mechanic what needs fixing in a car.

When there's shite all over your bathroom, do you expect the plumber to come over and tell you why for free?
Hell no! But I don't expect a charge for him to use a tool to help him diagnose the problem. I pay for a service.

When you go to work every day, do you just not charge your employer for the first half hour of every task? Do you think the mechanic should just give you that diagnostic time for free?
You are again talking about a service. How much time does it take for a mechanic to plug something in to diagnose a problem? The issue I have is that it seems like I am being asked to subsidize the cost of a pricey tool that a mechanic needs to do his job. A mechanic had expertise, which is what I pay for. Why should I pay for something that saves him time and (eventually) money to do his job?

Yeah. The service IS what you're paying for.

Because otherwise, he'd have to charge you 3 hours of labor to diagnose the damned thing without the tool instead of an hour to diagnose it with. The actual repair would take the same amount of time either way.
Your call.

does the $100 scanner give you the actual readings of things like air, fuel mixture or voltage readings at each pin in the connector?
Mine does. Hell, I can graph the voltages to watch for any patterns through the rev range.

Recently repaired a 96 van with these cable ends. They work many many different ford vehicles according to the chart. May work for you.

Is a mechanic a lying POS when he says he can fix any type engine? I'm not talking about his interpretation of being fixed but the manufacturer's interpretation.

My jeep's turn signal light was going out, so when it alerted me (blinker was flashing fast) I changed out the bulbs. Now even with the new bulbs, it's still alerting me. The right turn signal remains lit and it beeps randomly to change the bulb. I've changed it twice now with no luck. Any idea?
