As a tornado with 152 mph winds approached St. Louis, no one was there to push the warning button

ST. LOUIS — The head of St. Louis City Emergency Management has been placed on administrative leave just days after it was revealed the storm sirens never sounded Friday because the button to activate the system was never pushed.
St. Louis Mayor Cara Spencer has named Capt. John Walk as the interim director of CEMA pending the results of both internal and external investigations into what went wrong Friday afternoon.
Though it could be some time before that investigation is released, Mayor Spencer said early indications are that the system meant to keep people safe failed on multiple fronts.
As an EF3 tornado tore across St. Louis Friday afternoon Dani Eickenhorst and Mya Grimes say they had no clue what was happening.
“There was not a siren that tipped everybody off,” Dani Eickenhorst said.
“There was no indication,” Mya Grimes said. “No sirens went off or anything. Just the text message on our phone.”
According to Mayor Cara Spencer, there’s a good explanation for why they never heard the sirens.
quote:
In fact, at the time the storm hit St. Louis, members of City Emergency Management were a half mile away from their office at a training.
“We knew there was weather coming,” Spencer said. “We should’ve been at the button. I don’t know why that decision was made.”

So did they, or did they not get a warning beforehand that a tornado may be close by?

The audible tornado sirens did not go off.

I guess not living in a place with a lot of tornadoes. I didn't realize an actual person had to "sound the alarm". I thought there was some kind of detection system.

Is not some kind of automated system to sound the alarm? Can't believe that they really have to rely on Pat/Patricia to push a button.

I think emergency management type people are all from a certain breed. I know a... ughhhh. Officially I guess woman.. who does a similar job, but its titled something else and she and this person probably have some things in common.

This is what I imagine the new voiceover on 104.5 looks like.

I don’t see the big deal. NOLA floods multiple times a year because people aren’t there to turn on the pumps.

Stop depending on the gov.

I live over 1000 miles from St. Louis. Just saw this one the national news and thought it was an interesting story.

If memory serves, the outdoor sirens only go off when a visual sighting on the ground is made by a weather observer.
The red hooks on the radar don't trigger them.
I remember the summers in KC and STL growing up when these things practically went off every day at 3pm... grabbing the gold fish and running to the basement was a regular part of my upbringing. My dad used to ignore them entirely.

the public deserves to know what the training was for..
Was it how to better respond to weather emergencies
OR
Was it a diversity and inclusion training?

They didn’t even know where the panic button was and when tested after the storm…it didn’t work anyway. You can’t make this shite up!
quote:
Mayor Spencer also revealed Wednesday that they've since discovered the button to activate the storm siren from the fire department wasn’t working properly.
I could care less if it pisses people off, but so much Democratic dysfunction has completely destroyed STL. proper, they haven’t had anything but the Democratic machine running the city in over 60 years.
This follows a winter in which they had not 1 but 2 snow storms that completely shut down the city, not because they were blizzards nor double digit snow accumulations…they never even deployed the trucks and plows in the first place.
The state has had to actively take over the STL. Metropolitan police department and this is after the state having to take over the city’s attorney office as well.

There are "two" buttons that activate the sirens. One at EM and "one" at the fire stations. It was the one at the fire stations that didn't work.
