Yes, but you can control the people you hire to fight the crime.

Honestly, crime has been falling for a long time. Yet, we still have just as many police, if not more. Again, I understand there are a few exceptions to this, but good grief, we certainly don't need all the law enforcement we have. We sure as hell don't need them having all this military gear, either. That's another thread, though.

Can I has mo money?

Blame the feds on the equipment issue, they make available for stupid cheap.

I'm not arguing the people you hire issue, hire more qualified people, increase the pay and you will see a positive outcome.

I'm out here now because I enjoy doing what I do, I'm sure I could go do something and make more money but that's not the most important thing for me right now. For someone else they might want to do it and generally be called to want to help people but won't do it because they can't justify a 4year degree to make 30k.

Sure, trim the fat from other areas and re-allocate the funds.

Burge, you'll notice I haven't disparged LEOs, but some of these departments exsist solely for nothing. They demean your profession (yeah, levee Board, I'm talking about you )

You have a hard job and we appreciate you.

No shite. A buddy of mine is a brpd. He patrols a pretty harsh area. He told me that of like 750 brpd officers only like 300 patrol. He told me about the mounted guys only messing with horse stuff. Like parades and whatnot. Some dude called speedy told me I'm an idiot or something but wouldn't refute the claim. I was also told there's a pack of officers at the car fixing center thing. Not mechanics, or administrative people... Badge carrying officers.

My buddy loves what he does and is a high character cat. He hates the waste and fat at brpd. The problem is any police type anywhere ultimately reports to some dickhole politician. Without the civil service protection that covers the waste he could be hung out to dry for pissing off the wrong donor.

Great conversation.

Better pay gets better candidates

Civil service protects good cops from being fired for arresting the wrong person. We typically don't have unions in the South.

The problem with police work isn't civil service or the unions. It's the culture of unprofessional departments. You have the change the cultures of those departments.

Having SOs take over isn't always a great idea. The reason they can't run radar in Mississippi is because they were do corrupt back in the day. Some are still unprofessional at best.

Each state has different retirements. All of Mississippi's public employees are under the same system. 30 years at 60%.

I love cameras. They make our job so much easier and effective. Your mind is a weird tool and in extreme situations it's very hard to remember the exact sequence of events. That's why eye witnesses tell 10 different stories about the same event.

I have no issue with body cameras as long as citizens are arrested after false complaints are filed and the video exonerates the officer and the complaint is an outright lie.

So you want very stiff punishments for civilians while continuing to let the police run wild with no consequences?

We have consequences. Serious ones at good departments.

Suspended with pay pending an internal investigation is not a consequence.

I'm sure you are partially correct and that there are some good departments out there. But there are a lot of bad ones too.

Means that person is about to be terminated in my experience. Without fail that has been the case.

Suspended without pay sucks.
