ETA: As Free mentions, divorce from marriage isn't seen as the same scourge to those who fight for the traditional definition of marriage. To me, the battle is backwards. Don't focus on the definition of it, focus and fight for the core value of it.

Yes, but a lot of people will blame Western colonialism for for any lack of advancement in civilization among those cultures.
For our society, the upheaval would cataclysmic. Tearing asunder the familial unit that ones society is entirely based upon would have drastic and far-reaching consequences, many of which would not be pleasant for anyone involved.

Well, there would be two reasons for that.
First, a lot of Protestant denominations have long been OK with divorce. It's not orthodox (the Bible says the opposite in red letters), but the underlying beliefs say divorce isn't as bad.
Second reason is even people who agree that divorce is bad feel it's a lost cause, whereas the idea of SSM was widely considered absurd in recent memory.
