I don’t know how anyone could read this and not feel totally disgusted and angry. Imagine this guy’s life if he didn’t have smart parents with an abundance of resources to fight his case, and imagine what’s happening to tons of other patients every day across the country who can’t fight for their healthcare like this one could. Our system is so buried in greed and broken beyond repair and I don’t think we will see any significant enough reform in our lifetimes to make a difference.

of course not... the alternative is constantly mischaracterized as socialism, so yeah, our healthcare system ain't changing no time soon... as long as insurers are beholden to their shareholders and not their clientele, we will continue to be fricked

Medical billing practices/coding in general are also a huge issue. Compounding this issue is the fact that so many medical providers farm out their billing department to people/entities that are entirely disconnected from and ignorant of the underlying service for which the provider selected a particular code. In other words, there is a huge disconnect between the provider who actually treats the patient and the entity who generates and issues the invoice for that treatment.

They also do this on a micro level with prescription coverage denials for a lot of folks.

When I was having esophageal issues (ulcers, GERD flare after gallbladder surgery) they denied liquid Carafate for me (medication to coat the esophagus) and it was going to cost me $800 a month out of pocket.

I ended up with the generic, that were horse sized pills you had to dissolve in water just to get down. And wasn't near as good as the liquid.

Is it your insinuation that a government system would be better and wouldn’t also deny coverage?

i'm saying by changing our end of life strategy/philosophy, as well as making preventative care free, or even rewarding it via tax breaks or some shite, it would eventually save money on the back end... chronic disease, usually from those who did jack and shite to take care of themselves, at all, are what cause healthcare expenditures to rise... but the idea of shared costs is just too much for some people...

Insurance companies? Ask anyone who is the worst insurance to deal with. 9 outta 10 are going to say "Medicare"! Those SOBs deny for no reason, then make you jump thru hoops for months. A lot of times, it takes going as far as pushing the claim all the way to an administrative judge. At the end of the day, they know a lot of companies will just give up......and that claim just doesn't get paid. The difference is, with private insurance, the patient is ultimately responsive. With Medicare, not so much. There's a reason why a lot of docs are not accepting new Medicare patients.

My Dad is on Medicare and has had several health issues the last 8 years including 2 cancers and he has been well taken care of. He has been able to choose what oncologist he wanted which is more than I would get with my private insurance. Overall, medicare for he and my mom has been very good

Citation needed also yeah Medicare isn’t perfect and has problems but tends to happen when you don’t properly fund stuff. The insurance companies pay off the media and politicians to shite on any type of government funded healthcare because it’s a threat to their profit margins. The very fact that these companies bottom line is profit means that they’ll have zero hesitation to frick over their people. Yeah nobody is saying government healthcare would be utopian but it’d be better than the bullshite we have no. Unfortunately lots of people are brainwashed into thinking the current way is the best way because America. They’ve been indoctrinated with decades of well America is perfect and best at everything they can’t possibly comprehend that something as important and fundamental as healthcare is something America doesn’t excel at

Glad that worked out for your dad, but go talk to anyone who works in hospital, doctor, medical equipment, or clinical billing. Again, there is a reason more and more docs are telling patients that they are no longer accepting new medicare patients.

Medicare denies or the Medicare “advantage” plans? Those suck. Our inpatient rehab people get kicked out by their “advantage” Medicare e programs but straight Medicare people get up to 100 days.

The advantage plans give a discharge date when they come in before they’re even evaluated for therapy.

Negative, ghost rider. You might mean Medicaid! Virtually all US citizens age 65 and over are covered by Medicare because we all pay into the system. You pay FICA and Medicare (HI) on every payroll check. 99.9 % of doctors take Medicare; otherwise, they would not get paid.
