In your opinion what is primary difference? I feel like the word narcissist may be overused today. Often, it's associated with politicians and celebrities.

Arrogance is a personality trait, while narcissism is actually a brain disorder, so, it's not something that should be thrown around as much as it is. Do you believe you know someone who is a narcissist? And, what makes them a narcissist rather than just an arrogant person?

Most girls that get broken up with claim their ex is a narcissist. Gets thrown around way too much. Maybe they just weren’t into you. Doesn’t make them a narcissist.

The difference is empathy.

Arrogant people can still be empathetic.

Narcissistic people cannot.

quote:

Narcissism is the pursuit of gratification from vanity or egotistic admiration of one's idealised self image and attributes. This includes self-flattery, perfectionism, and arrogance. The term originated from Greek mythology, where the young Narcissus fell in love with his own image reflected in a pool of water.

I guess the last guy nailed it from his wikipedia clip.

Arrogance is a singular personality trait. Narcissism is a syndrome or collection of personality traits that include arrogance.

Someone can be arrogant but otherwise well adjusted, capable of accepting personal responsibility, and caring and willing to help others.

If you've ever had the displeasure of knowing/working with Narcissistic personality disorder you'll never forget it or mistake it for simple arrogance. People with NPD can appear to be quite charming until you injure their psyche or their sense of entitlement, at which point they'll unleash their wrath on you. It's a sight to behold.

Arrogance is more “ I know everything and I’m the shite”. Narcissism is an extreme, malignant form of selfishness and truly believing the world revolves around oneself.

Narcissism is commonly described as self obsession but that's really a side effect of the real condition that is being completely oblivious to anything outside of your own existence, no consideration for others or other perspectives.

Arrogant is simply an adjective to describe someone who thinks they are smarter/better than other people, but really aren't. Example, if a championship winner talks shite, it is obnoxious, rude, unsportsmanlike, but not arrogant, because they actually are better. That's an important distinction when describing arrogance.

Narcissists typically display arrogant behavior but not all acts of arrogance are a symptom of narcissism.

Another example-

A person can read single book about native american history and then walk around acting like they are an expert on the subject, that would be arrogant but not narcissistic.

A person could be invited to an all expenses paid getaway with extended family and then bitch about how they got the shittiest accommodations, completely oblivious to the fact everyone else chipped in except him... that's not arrogant but it sure is narcissism.

My wife has two classic narcissists in her family, I am intimate with the true signs.

This. There are videos on YouTube that tell you how to recognize and deal with narcissists. It's not fun, you're just learning how to survive knowing a narcissist. Narcissists have no self-awareness, they can't be fixed.

While there are plenty of psychopaths in Congress, the Narcissist-in-Chief is the only obvious narcissist among the national politicians.

These two posts will be the correct answer to the OP's question.

A great real life example of a narcissist is Michael Avenatti and this Vanity Fair article does a great job spelling out the adventures of a narcissist. LINK

I don't care to get political but true narcissists don't get that far in life.

Trump is not a narcissist.

Everyone has some narcissism in them. It depends on where you fall on the scale.

If 5 is the average, people with narcissistic personality disorder are 9-10. It's not that common to see true NPD and like I said, you'll never forget it when you see it.

Narcissists can be successful or poor. It's not limited to socioeconomic status.

Obama was a narcissist. You can see it in his speeches, and how he repeatedly refers to himself.

Trump may be vain and arrogant - but look at how he uses the word we, repeatedly, when he speaks. He sees the world very differently than Obama.

I agree there are scales of narcissism but to be labeled a narcissist, a true narcissist, you aren't going that far in life.

As far as people sometimes displaying narcissistic behavior at times, that doesn't make them a narcissist.

Alot of people are only alcoholic narcissists, they are completely normal people who care for others until the alcohol molecule hits their system. That doesn't make them a narcissist, anymore than it makes them crippled because they are too drunk to walk.

I don’t know Obama or Trump personally, nor am I enough of an expert to say that either one of them is or isn’t a narcissist.

See, that’s lack of arrogance.

Trump is not a narcissist. That’s silly talk by someone who know nothing about the term.
