The current state minimum wage will go from $8.50 per hour to $9.25 on Jan. 1, 2019, then to $10 per hour on Jan. 1, 2020, and to $11/hour on Jan. 1, 2021.

In early numbers from the Secretary of State’s office, Issue 5 received 68.39% support while 31.61% were opposed.

The issue received support from many in the state’s labor organizations, saying the increase was needed to help people while opponents said the increase would create an impact on the cost of doing business especially for small to medium sized businesses.

That's terrific news for unskilled workers in north Louisiana.

I don't believe minimum wage should exist at all, so I disagree with the principle.

Although Arkansas should do what they want. This should absolutely be a state by state issue.

Does the increase apply to the undocumented labor crews at the chicken plants? I hope so. Maybe then American unskilled labor may take the job.

I took an economics class once, so of course, I think this is stupid.

Dumb move in general. Smart on the slow increase at least.

I dont know why people dont dust off all the promises by the dems back in '06 (iirc) when the national min wage was increased. Where are we with that being the answer??

If we’re going to have a minimum wage, I don’t mind attempts to keep up with inflation. I do mind people making arguments that minimum wage jobs should provide living wage salaries.

Depends if big Chicken (Tyson or Pilgrims) wants to admit their labor force of record. Sevier County for example. Like most ag red states, no one wants to admit who they're reliant on.

I digress. I'm torn. But at $11.00, I do think it could help kick some things in gear for a small state like Arky. Let trickle down work and study it.

The counter argument is if as a company, if you are dependent on $7/hr labor, then you need to update your processes.

Meaning outsourcing manufacturing/production to China and Taiwan for .25/hr?

More like front office efficiency and CDL reliant OTR transport hard looks for the bigs. Guessing but it would seem like the place to start. For all others, from grocery to retail to whatever, some will have to get smart on contracts.

the minimum wage will never be a living wage. Raise it all you want but skilled labor will go up as well as everything else...essentially keeping that hourly rate the same as it's always been

I could care less. If $11 is so attractive, then quit your current job and go get a minimum wage one.

I don't disagree, but a 22% increase over three years isn't indexing with inflation. If it is, we're all fricked

I don't understand how people don't understand this. If I'm working at a company as skilled labor and the unskilled labor gets a 2w% raise, I'm not going to continue to work for the same amount. It's the simplest economic concept that exists.

And were ignoring the fact that the typically largest expense in production just rose over 20%, and people will bitch when the prices go up.

MOST places are already paying over $9 an hour here in NW AR anyway. Hell , our local chicken plant is offering $11 an hour for dayshift, $13 for nighthift. McDonalds has had a sign up for at least 6 months "starting wage $10 an hour"

I voted yes on this though because I've little doubt that there are areas of the state where the minimum wage is all that is offered.
