Yes, I will be leaving as soon as possible.....I have a few years left to retirement, and then I will be gone....I love the state, but hate everything that comes with it.

I have never been a victim of a violent crime but I know that I watch where I go at night in Baton Rouge.

The thought of having my teenaged daughter driving around this city at night in a few years is downright terrifying.

Wait, so is your argument that the cities are facing impending doom?

that was specifically about Nola and the covid-related tourism and commercial RE doom that may occur

however, in addition to Nola, other urbna areas are hurting

lafayette is going to face issues b/c of the offshore drilling issue. without offshore drilling, Laf is in trouble. it can come back, though. that's how Laf works

LC was booming but isn't anymore b/c of Saudi Arabia manipulating gas prices and hurting the long term future of certain petro products at the heart of our expansion. we won't die or anything, but we're not booming anymore (Laura didn't help)

collapse is strong, but Nola and LAF are facing some major long-term issues due to oil/covid

i lived in Br for 7 years and other than gardere, it was easy to avoid bad areas. well that stuff can shift wildly. in 12-18 months Tigerland went from college housing to ghetto

all of those overbuilt apartment complexes are going to have to face a reckoning. you have the chance of Tigerlands popping up in random areas.

Cyclic and will return. The world isn’t off of oil in the next twenty years.

Neither of which will still be wreaking havoc within a year.

I work in petro-chem industry, other than South of Houston.....this place pays better than any other.

I could go anywhere as a civil, but I would not make what I make. Wife's job is more important than mine and hers can not leave.

Said in another thread...for those that are upper middle class and can afford private achool....LA, specifically south LA and specifically LC and Laffy offer a great great standard of living.

Great private schools, low cost of living, great outdoors, great people and food.

Sure there are better places, but if you have a family and are upper middle, LA is pretty damn good.

And that’s not because of poor whites.

And that’s relegated to very specific areas minus an outlier here and there.

Crime hugs areas where everyone knows to avoid.

Nola isn't going to have normal tourism for a bit

even if covid vaccines are proliferated quickly, it will be a year. then it's a question of how people can afford vacations during a worldwide depression. you're asking a LOT of good fortune to have Nola back in a year

If I move from New Orleans to Atlanta, Dallas, Memphis, or any other big city, am I really at a significantly higher risk of being a victim of violent crime? I doubt it tbh

You’ll be scared of this no matter where your daughter is. Mine drives the city now to see her boyfriend some times. Wouldn’t matter where I lived, she’d still have me checking in on her regularly.

i don't disagree with this

it's just that i'm saying those opportunities are not common among the entire state

LC, even though the boom didn't last as long as initially projected, still has great economic opportunities in the petro industries. i think only BR has similar opportunities on the same sort of scale. that's why i haven't really been bearish on BR in this thread. state government vampirism + Exxon will keep BR alive for sure

Why does it have to be a year? New Orleans isn’t going to collapse within a year or two. You’re on a fringe end of being scared, SFP. Everywhere needs a rebound, not just NOLA or Louisiana.

I had to leave Louisiana for 7 years traveling all over this country. We have been to just about every state in the USA. There is no place in America better than Louisiana. We are finally back home because I work out of the office now in Lafayette. I will never leave this state because the people are second to none here.

XOM may be dropping in it's days as a BR economic driver.

What takes XOM's place is beyond what I can see.

Those opportunities are not common in ANY state, brother. They require work to grab that brass ring no matter where you are.

Not yet they aren’t. The state has to plan for the day within the next twenty or thirty years where it is no longer the driver, but cyclic downturns aren’t signs that oil is on its way out.

Weather, economics, and politics make me want to leave.
My lack of job mobility, the current economic/political climate due to covid, and having a good circle of friends here make me want to stay.

You are definitely the emotional one out of you and SFP. The entire post I'm responding to was an emotional reaction to slow linking objective data, which you've done repeatedly in this thread. It might hurt your feelings, but Louisiana has an objectively poor quality of life compared to almost every other state.

That was already happening before this latest bump in the road. It's being covered by covid and whatever economic downturn.

Doesn't mean that the site won't exist.
