The "Greek" empire you speak of, which was really Macedonian, collapsed because it grew too large too quickly (the empire collapsed in very short order after Alexander's death).

In that sense, your interpretation is backwards -- it was military campaigning without any concern for institutional consolidation that ultimately led to the empire's short lifespan.

On a related note, it is worth pointing out that the Roman conquest of the Hellenstic world occurred approximately 200 years after Alexander's death. It isn't like one thing led directly to the other ...

This is why we need to invest MORE in humanities education -- this watered down historical narrative you've concocted has led to exactly the wrong conclusion.

It's happening now; at the hands of the barbarian hoardes of Islam and the roaving masses of hominid locusts travelling northward from South and Central America.

I say the little gamer nerd that flies the drone with bomb attached is tough enough to take on the toughest man in the world.

No, people will always do as little as possible to survive, right now sitting upright isn't even necessary for survival for most of the people on earth.

1) Illegal immigration has actually declined since 2007. Bet you didn't realize that.

2) The US has taken relatively few muslim asylum seekers in comparison to European countries with much smaller populations.

3) Stop scapegoating foreigners.

I was talking more about the Pelloponesian wars between Athens and Sparta strengthening both of them into powers. Alexander (or really his father) conquered an already weakened Greece IMO. I agree he stretched himself too thin though

Oh really? So we're registering and tracking who is here illegally? Seems like a rock solid figure to take at face value. Always amazed that folks are actually stupid enough to buy that we have accurate numbers on how many illegals are here... Do they text the census bureau when they cross the border for a free taco at Jack in the Box?

SO what? How has it worked out for those countries? Not well? Then what's your point?

I'm no more scapegoating foreigners than a doctor is scapegoating cancer when he diagnoses a patient with Leukemia.

Stop burying your head in the sand.

Umm, no. Athens was the power prior to the war. After the war, Athens was devastated and the Spartans took control of the region. The Peloponnesian War did nothing but weaken Athens.

I would read some Thucydides.

I agree that eugenics is the only viable solution here.

Eugenics with voluntary participants would be fricking awesome.

I always bring this up in these threads, but Michael Phelps/Missy Franklin - Lebron/Candace Parker, Bo Jackson/Serena Williams, etc.

I wish we could make super babies and train them from birth to be Navy SEALS - and obviously allow them to opt out or their parents to pull them out. I'm talking like a sports academy but instead of sports, they focus on physical fitness, breath holding, marksmanship, hand-to-hand combat, etc. as well as other studies.

Lets bring back motherfrickin' Sparta. (without the baby killing and forced participation)

Imagine a Bo Jackson/Serena Williams offspring trained from birth to dominate at those things.

Yeah, and I don't even think it helped Sparta out too much. They won, but never had the manpower to hold their winnings and didn't Thebes defeat Sparta not too long after this? It's been a while since I looked at this.

If you're talking about individual men being physically soft, I'd think it's obvious our modern technology is the reason.

If you're talking about how seemingly vulnerable so many people are--allergies for example--maybe it's Bc modern medicine and vaccines keep weaker folk alive who previously wouldn't have reproduced.

Europe is so soft Bc two world wars decimated two generations of their young men. Left a vacuum, and extreme liberalism is doing the rest to literally welcome its invaders.

Yeah, a non buoyant SEAL with a fricked up hip that bitched at the umpire all day in a close battle.

Well then there is a VERY tenuous connection between their decline and the Roman conquest. We're talking centuries here.

You get my point.

We can have Phelps/Franklin babies be SEALS and Bo/Serena babies be Rangers...

Given our system of measurement, the numbers have declined. The reason is that fewer want to come to post-recession America. You can choose to believe it or not, doesn't make a difference to me.

The point is that there are very few Muslim refugees in the U.S. It is not really an issue, you guys are making mountains out of molehills.

Well according to you, the problem with our country is Latinos and Muslims. In fact, the problems are economic in nature and run much deeper than that. We're looking at a situation in which most of the "gains" in the post-recession era have gone to the wealthiest individuals in society. In essence, fewer and fewer people share a slice of the American pie. THAT'S the problem. Has almost nothing to do with immigrants.
