Southwest Airlines Boeing 737-700, registration N401WN performing flight WN-1392 from Dallas Love,TX to Austin,TX (USA). landed on Austin's runway 17R when the crew spotted a man on the runway and attempted to avoid the individual, the left engine however hit and killed the man. The aircraft rolled out without further incident, the crew advised tower "there might be a person on the runway" and added at about the touch down point. Tower instructed the next arrival on finals to go around. There were no injuries on board of the aircraft, the aircraft sustained damage to the left hand engine.

AV Herald

quote:

The man was pronounced dead at 8:41 p.m., police said. Officials on Friday didn't release the man's identity or details about why he was on the runway.
The aircraft that struck him was a Boeing 737, airport spokesman Bryce Dubee said.
Dubee said the man did not have a security badge and was not authorized to be on the landing strip. However, he could not confirm Friday whether the man was employed in some other role at the airport.

So, from the look of it, the man went into the engine?

So this man had a security clearance or not. Should have been wearing an airport badge. That’s a breach if he wasn’t employed at AUS.

I can’t decide if that’s a good way to go or not. Still thinking.

I hope so. You gotta figure he was pretty good knowing where to stand since most of the plane is way over his head. I imagine that engine knocked the piss out of him literally.

Southwest has now killed more people on the ground outside their planes than people inside their planes in its history.

ETA: Damn it’s now tied at 2-2. I forgot about the person who got killed by other passengers when he tried to storm the cockpit in 2000.

They overran the runway at Midway and ran over a car in 2003.

In 2018 a lady got partially sucked out after the engine blew a hole in the side of the plane.

But they really have a remarkable safety record for a big airline. No major crashes.

I assume this was purposeful. So, I'm thinking its not any better than knowingly getting in front of a hungry large croc and knowing you're about to die.

Would have been bad if he was authorized to be on the runway. That's when you know your boss hates you.

Would the reverse thrust prevent him from being sucked in to the engine? Seriously don't know
