Is that true?
Definitely.
Steal a trade in for 8k, sell it for 19k.
The margins are higher selling used. They actually lose money on the new and make it up stealing trades and in the service department.

I respect anyone who has a job. Especially people with shitty jobs. I’ve sold insurance and I didn’t like it but a lot of people do. If you are a good salesperson it doesn’t matter what you sell.

I worked a couple semesters during school part time at a used car lot. It was higher end used stuff. The pay wasn't great but it was beer money and the cool cars were half the fun.
From that time I got to know the owner and the industry a bit. I did a couple used car fraud cases for a buddy who worked at a bank, just some research. I also know a couple guys as an adult that work there.
It's not a great industry. Even the full time guys are compensated like part time - few benefits, not much of a base salary, very little loyalty. You have a few really high end and high volume stores that might have some well-compensated guys, but that's it.
The average is probably well below where you would want your kids to be.And there are a larger than normal amount of substance abusers and ex-cons, as there is little certification to speak of.

FIFY
Look, I'm sure there are some shitty tote the note places that just throw a little tree in a trade and try to flip it without doing any sort of repairs...and if someone wants to buy that, caveat emptor.
But there's no business that doesn't try to turn a profit. I knew a guy who would buy cars with issues for as little as he could, fix them up, and flip them for a profit.
I never once thought of that guy as a sleazeball.
There's definitely some scum in every industry, but I'm not gonna fault people that buy cars with issues to fix them up and resell. Gotta make the margins somehow

Just stop by any of the used lots on West O. Theyre all the same culturally.

Drugs, booze, strip clubs, divorce. Pretty sure it’s mandatory to be dabbling in at least two of those at any given time to be in sales.

shite man most people dont even have to get that far to hate em. The process is designed to wear you down.
But selling a new 72k diesel can get you 1200, while selling a stolen trade for a 15k markup can get you double or more depending on if commission is paid out in gross or volume (flat rate per car). Sales managers encourage getting walk ups off the new cars and into the used. Better for the dealership, better for the salesman.
Nothin against warrior poet freemanator but I've seen them get vacuumed out and sold the next day. Youre right about the margins and turning a profit. We knew what we owned the trade for and they'd challenge us to earn as much as we could.
"Damn jiff seems like you've worked at a shitty dealership before."
Yep, I've worked at both kinds. It was educational if nothing else.
Word to the wise, if they pull out a 4-square just walk away. Doesn't matter how much time you've invested into making this mistake just get up and go.
Hope this shite helps a baw out.

These are the people who get cussed out by me after ringing my doorbell (ignoring the no soliciting sign) and waking up my kid.
I can't imagine it's a fun job but, as I told the last guy that did it, why the frick would I buy anything from someone who can't read.

4-square
Whats this?
Posted on 8/23/25 at 1:07 am to TigersHuskers
A "4 square" in car sales refers to a negotiation tactic where a car dealership uses a worksheet divided into four boxes to discuss different aspects of the deal: the price of the new car, the trade-in value of the customer's old car, the down payment, and the monthly payment. This method is often criticized for being confusing and designed to distract the customer from focusing on the overall price of the car.
