Actually helps if your parents teach you the right things. I was watching Bill Wichrowski on Deadliest Catch last week, and he gave a good line from his dad:
“I’m not here to be your friend. I’m here to teach you how to survive in this world.”

If you're born stupid, ugly, and spastic in America, you're highly unlikely to achieve what the majority of Americans consider to be success in life. This statement isn't meant to be an indictment of children with disabilities or Pimp's religious and rock climbing friends, but a more general statement about our societal norms.
The overwhelming majority of successful people are either intelligent, attractive or athletic. If you're all three (like most OT'rs, I presume), you'd have to be a severely lazy and unmotivated person to not achieve a degree of success. Mental illness could also sidetrack you, but not always. Intelligence, attractiveness, and athleticism isn't a guarantee of success, but I'd say the majority of successful people possess at least one of these traits.
If you really think about it, you'll be hard pressed to name a successful person who is neither intelligent, attractive or athletic. I'm not necessarily talking about "genius" intelligence, although that helps with winning that Nobel Prize. A person of average intelligence, combined with dedication, hard work and a good idea can also achieve financial success. But strictly speaking, the child who falls out of the womb with the proper combination of genes to make him/her grow up to be intelligent, attractive and athletic is going to find life much easier.

I suspect that if you were a total a-hole to everyone you encountered, your life would be considerably less charmed.
This kind of falls into the category of "making your own luck". Generally speaking, people treat you how you treat them or how they see you treat other people. A "lucky" person's prior behavior has usually laid the groundwork for their current luck, whether it was in the form of education, training or establishing a network of friends and business contacts.

Figured I would get that from some moron here.
I've worked pretty hard for my degrees and have been making in the 6 figures for the past 5 years and will until I retire.
I was surprised it turns out that luck is more important than effort in building wealth but fact is, it is. A lot of life is about right place right time and who you know. Maybe you are young and don't realize this yet. But you will eventually.

Winning takes effort but it helps if you have well off parents. When you know that you are ok if you fail at something and still stand to inherit diamonds and gold, then you can say WTF and take chances. If you are the son of a famous musician or actor, you can work for Walmart and still rake in lots of pussy. It helps to be born with a silver spoon in your mouth .
Having well off parents is just as often a recipe for creating losers, look at all the screwed up kids of actors and musicians, I could give a long run down of worthless adults and kids I know that came from well off families. Knowing that you can do nothing, and still be well off is not much of a motivator, knowing you are on your own with no safety net tends to make you think about what you are doing, and making good decisions in life.

Well then, since you've been making in the six figures for 5 whole years, you must really know what it takes to be a winner. Congratulations!
Only losers brag about their salary. Especially 6 figures. That's pretty standard for anyone that's 5-10 years into their career.
fricking loser.

Luck is a real thing
If you're born into a wealthy family, that's definitely good luck, but it's not an absolute guarantee of success. You are likely to be provided with more opportunities to achieve success through your family and their network of friends and educational access, but if you're stupid and lazy you're unlikely to achieve success.
There's truth to the expression about being born on third base and believing you hit a triple. You haven't done shite except being born into the Lucky Womb Club.

I would say what makes you a winner or loser is how you treat people, and whether you had a positive impact on the people who loved you.

Of course. Best example of a winner is Donald Trump.
Lets assume that that Trump's father fronted him the $10-20 million bucks that he used to get started, many people have had parents that were mush wealthier than Trump's and did not come close to turning it into multiple billions of dollars.

If you take a macro view Anyone born in the United States is more lucky than most even if you’re not lucky compared to other Americans

Yeah I know OT ballers all make well into the 6 figures as a general rule and will for decades more to come. I'm a loser and ashamed now. Not OT worthy and will move along.

Of course there are winners and losers in life. How that's defined is going to be different with everyone

Luck is opportunity meeting preparedness.
If you develop some skills, you can be in a position to capitalize on them if the opportunity arises

Um, he inherited over $200 million. Forbes and others have already run the numbers to show he would be worth a lot more now if he had just put it in the stock market. They have also compared him to his peers of similar worth in the 1980s and 90 something percent have more money than trump does now.
Not to mention if you subtract his debt, he MIGHT barely have "billion". As in two billion, but maybe less.
Trump is a failure as a business man. As noted someone putting his inheritance in the stock market then putting their thumb in their arse and nothing more for the past 30+ years would have more money than donald.
