Before her early 30's you really can't tell but by 35 there are some obvious signs. A bad credit score, can't stay employed, etc.
Once upon a time I met a very good-looking 34 yo and arranged to pick her up at her house to go on a date. That house was very nice and much larger than I expected for a single woman. I wondered to myself whether she was divorced with kids to have a house like that.
Come to find out she was single with no kids, but had been living with her parents and on unemployment for over a year. When you're nearly 35 you need to be on your own two feet IMHO so I friendzoned her. Turned out to be a good choice, she didn't have very good judgment at all and was constantly getting into some kind of trouble.
