I couldn't agree more. More often than not anymore, EMS schools are certificate mills pushing warm bodies, who often need safe spaces, with a patch out onto the street and hope for the best.

I worked EMS part time for a couple of years. Everything that has been said is true. Especially the how gross people can be. Not only the person themselves but the filth in which they live. Fire/EMS for a municipality is the way to go. Private EMS , hell no.

mvas with multiple fatalities,
I saw an 18 wheeler flip on the basin and immediately burst in to flames like a movie last year. Sat there for a bit and it fricked me up in the head knowing that the dude was in the truck dying and we couldn't do anything. I couldn't imagine dealing with that on a daily basis.

The worst part about that is when they don’t tell you they have contagious diseases! So yeah, it can suck lol

The worst smell I ever encountered was from a bum who was lost in the woods for a few days. He was wet and had the worst stinch imaginable. Luckily I didn’t have to sit in the back with him or I would have thrown up all over the place.

My brother has been a paramedic for 10 years and is currently a flight paramedic (helicopter). He says that most of the stuff you eventually get numb to and you just focus on what needs to be done to block out the other stuff. There are some cases that affect you though that you can't avoid (i.e. had to transport an infant who was shot in the head).
I respect the hell out of what he does because of the type of resolve you have to have to remain in a profession like that.

Had a friend work EMT(very similar to paramedic) as part of volunteer FD. Based on stories I'd say the most underpaid job in America. Stressful, dirty, underappreciated, etc.
Nah Man to Listen to the teachers they are the ones that contribute so much and get so little
I totally agree a Paramedic should be paid a salary higher than any teacher ever makes.Of course that depends on where the paramedic works. If he is a big city paramedic then pay them. if he lives and works in hicksville then pay him just not as well as the busier guys.

My youngest son wants to be an emt. I am steering him the Firefighter/Emt college degree route. The paramedic driving around scooping up victims making 14.00 an hour must suck. Shitty hours and shitty pay to watch people die and try to save lives for nothing. frick that.
Correct me if I am wrong but firefighter/emt has much better benefits and pay because most have to have a degree now?
Has he considered being a Navy Corpsman? They are awesome and have a great variety in duty assignments from onshore med clinics, shipbased, and/or marine attached.
He'd be trained for free, earn college funding (GI Bill) and have a leg up on his competition in the private sector when he gets out.

I am a firefighter/paramedic. If anybody is considering this as a profession then definitely go through a professional fire dept. EMS agencies and ambulance services have the strangest workers ever. The EMTs and medics are as equally bizarre as the calls they make......and I work in Bawcomville lol

Medics are not the same they were 10+ years ago, its like they spit them out of school and put 2 newbies in a truck now days
Yeah, they put up billboards saying "become a superhero" and get 30 people per 6 month class and wonder why turn around is so high. I did 6 years and I'll never go back.

Awesome response Boston911! I am a paramedic in a busy city too and I fully agree with your comment.
(To the rest reading) Most of our lights and sirens calls are for people who don't really need an ambulance. The others have a foot in the grave and another on a banana peel. I like those calls. I pride myself on prescribed and aggressive care of saving those critical patients. sometimes they die in front of me, whether they are 0 or 100 years old. death is an inevitable part of life. we just have to put this in a "dead" place in our minds.
