If so just how emotionally draining is a job like that? I would imagine y'all see some pretty heartbreaking situations on a regular basis.

Had a friend work EMT(very similar to paramedic) as part of volunteer FD. Based on stories I'd say the most underpaid job in America.

Stressful, dirty, underappreciated, etc.

Former EMT. Not that bad when you have the right mind set. You realize how gross people can be though.

Very taxing emotionally as with a lots of frontline medical careers ( Ed, trauma, etc).

Worst is pediatric patients and family aftermath.

Much respect for the people who chose this as a profession.

Yeah I don’t understand why they are paid so poorly.

Forget giving teachers raises....give these guys raises.

Pay greatly depends on private service or fire based medics.

A good friend of mine is a first responder. He has some stories that no person should have.

Thankfully we have people like him though.

Sometimes the job can be rewarding, many times people are not appreciative and sometimes people just plain abuse the system. Occasionally you can really make a difference, but many times people don’t want to help themselves and that becomes a rut you can get in. Some calls are really bad and weigh on people, and in some cases there are support systems in place to assist the employees. And sometimes the best support structure is the coworker supporting each other. Sometimes es, days weeks or years after the call, the patient and or the family reaches out and extends their tanks, and that makes some of those bad calls really worthwhile.

In my opinion, for the responsibility you have in the amount of risk in the job, starting pay can be very low, however in the correct setting, meaning employer, you can have really good benefits, good retirement, and good equipment. Some of the private & public agencies are well-funded well-equipped, while some of the smaller agencies are not as well equipped to but the pace may be slower in some cases.

Beginning my 29th year in the industry, I can’t say that I have any regrets in choosing this profession, it’s been a good job, probably have five more years left. Had my share of good/rewarding calls and really messed up situations/911 calls. I can’t say that I miss the clinical portion, I now prefer the management responsibilities.

If I had to go back to running calls every day I would, but it would not be of my own choosing. In my opinion each person has a finite number of emergency calls they can go on in their lifetime, and I think I’ve reached that point.

My youngest son wants to be an emt. I am steering him the Firefighter/Emt college degree route. The paramedic driving around scooping up victims making 14.00 an hour must suck. Shitty hours and shitty pay to watch people die and try to save lives for nothing. frick that.
Correct me if I am wrong but firefighter/emt has much better benefits and pay because most have to have a degree now?

Push him to be a medic.

Not sure where you are, but in North Texas most 911 services are fire based and are typically Fireman and Paramedics. Time is split taking 911 call and fire call.

It is required here to be a Fireman and to also be a Paramedic.

Pay is more and benefits are better than private service.

No way I would want that job. I deal with medics on a daily basis. They see some of lafays nastiest people daily. There are few that are good medics, some try to be ricky rescues and theres some that you would
swear were half retarded. Id say that 70%+ of the people that call an ambulance do not need it. Its an abused system.

veterans always get a lot of attention, understanding, and help coping with PTSD but not many people consider that EMT, Firefighters, Police officers, doctors also see some sick shite that can really mess them up in the head.

I remember getting drunk with my uncle who was a OBGYN/surgeon and he told me about having to stitch a lady's genetalia back together after she had been brutally raped. she was all tore up. Said he came home disgusted with humanity after that. He ended up killing himself a few years later, not necessarily because of this incident but i think his job wore on him.

There aren't many of us around even a fraction that long. I began in 1989. Longevity isn't common. The cumulative stresses can be a killer

A friend is also former EMT.
Dealing with bloody HIV ppl and drug users messed with his head. He became paranoid(needle sticks etc) and the stress wasn't worth it.

I'd imagine kinda common?

Now seeing trauma in the field, actual true trauma, burn victims, mvas with multiple fatalities, GSWs, and other types of injuries can and will effect you. In a sense you become numb after a while. Theres one accident I’ll never forget, 2 guys left a bar and were drunk, swerved off the road and hit a culvert. The impact jammed their doors shut and the car caught on fire. They were literally charred when they arrived, 1 was still alive but died before airmed arrived. I can still smell that god awful smell and this was 10 yrs ago. Now flight paramedic could be something he could look into. I have several friends on airevac and they love their job

A buddy is a combat infantry veteran.
He had some trouble. Told me vast majority of guys claiming PTSD in military never even saw a shot fired in anger.
