Theoretically they do.. But do you honestly think the big ones play by the rules?

Absolutely. It's extremely regulated. Everything you get and receive is highly monitored.

Payoffs topoliticians don't usually come from lobby. It's an often repeated folk tale repeated by simpletons.

Would you prefer politicians, usually lawyers, make uninformed decisions on health care, defense, labor, etc?

Uncontrolled lobbying, like we have now, is bad. Some level of general lobbying which isnt coupled with political donations / corruption is probably good.

ETA: Being monitored =/= control

Wrong. It's virtually impossible for registered lobbyists. Palm greasers aren't usually lobby.

Oh OK - I'm actually good friends with one and hear the stories oil/gas bro.

Louisiana has lost billions of taxable dollars over decades due to stupid deals which were made by crooked politicians, government officials and Lobbyist Subtle Persuasion.

Like when a politician leaves office and then gets paid a shitload to be a "lobbyist"? I'm sure said politician had no bias at all during his time in office

I'd tax the frick out of it and pit that money towards a fund which allows individuals to donate up to to certain amount to campaigns of their choosing to help the people have financial power in elections like special interest groups.

Would also limit the kind of positions certain levels of ex-govt positions could hold

There are ways to "play by the rules" without actually playing by the rules.

Let's say a lobbyist group is lobbying for something and they need a few votes to get whatever they are lobbying for passed. The votes they need would come from members who don't have an interest in it either way. You don't think their vote isn't up for sale? (I am not saying all politicians would accept "gifts"so I am not saying it as if its across the board)..

All of a sudden some random person see that those members are given.. I don't know.. Cash. Maybe an all expense paid trip to Morocco, etc, etc, etc.. It could be something as small as tickets to some big sporting event..

I know. So id take every special interest group, tax the frick out of their "lobbying" costs and put 100% of said tax revenue into a fund that help the entire population cotribute to campaign finance - the mechanism of how that fund gets paid out can take various forms but basically put monetary power into the general populations hands as it relates to campaign finance which is subsidized by a large lobbying tax

ETA: I see the confusion - people have monetary power similar to special interest groups.

Not people, like special interest groups, have monetary power
