It has nothing to do with laziness. People forget to do it.
Question is: Why don't car companies have an auto-turn-off when the key/fob are out of a certain range from the car for a certain amount of time?
My wife's car unlocks automatically when you get close and locks when you walk far enough away. They could easily do this.
ETA:
Hers also beeps like a maniac if she walks away while its running.

The stupid shite people do amazes me. The ignorance people have when it comes to cars goes up as the level of technology evolves into the auto industry. "Smart cars" will breed a whole new level of stupid.

I had a hybrid company car for a while and it was pretty easy to leave it "running". Pull into a parking lot, do a little work on your laptop, get out (no engine is running), come back two hours later and it's running.
Taking the key out of the engine in a muscle memory kind of thing and becomes second nature. Without a physical key to remove it's easier than you think to forget (at least in a hybrid).

In the two and a half years I owned my VW, not once did I do this. And I happen to be forgetful as shite.

This... I'm not turning it off every time I run back inside from the driveway or into a store for 2 minutes.
I used to do the same when I had a normal ignition too and I'm not killing anyone.

Don't they mean carbon monoxide? I know engines put out both but I thought it was the monoxide that kills you?

I do this sometimes if I forgot something in the house and need to run in real quick.
I'll do the same. The car keeps running but if someone tries to drive off without the remote in the car it will shut down.

Is you have two high end cars with keyless ignition systems and u hang then next to each other or throw them in bin together etc, be careful as they can set each other off and start your car. Not sure what makes and models do this but several cases where this has happened.

I remember accidentally washing my VW key. After taking it out of the washing machine, it started popping my trunk and setting off the alarm non stop. Was quite embarrassing and annoying till I realized I just needed to take the battery out of the key fob
