I feel like a lot of the medical experts - the ones who are advising government and the ones we see being interviewed - are doing their level best to try to predict an unpredictable event.

We live in a world - especially down here in LA - where every group of thunderstorms is hyped up by the media and the tv meteorologists to be the end of the world, the worst ever, etc. Not only are they no longer taken seriously, but since it never turns out to be as bad as they say it will be, the local baws will say that it was being hyped up on purpose.

I'm starting to wonder if people are thinking the same thing about these medical experts. Very few people seem to think their predictions will become accurate. It probably won't be as bad as they say, but that's only if we take actions to prevent the worst-case scenario. But a lot of people are so willing to dismiss them completely.

I think these medical experts are caught in a world in which we have been lied to / over-hyped so many times by the media, that we no longer trust anything they have to report.

Did you make that up? I’ve never heard media in any form say that.

What does the media have to do with what a medical expert says?

Have you ever watched a weather report early in hurricane season where the weathermen are basically wishing for it to be named?

Because the media is reporting what the expert says, and/or broadcasting what the expert says.

Where are the people getting their information?

Anytime a weatherman is wrong, he can blame it on God/Mother Nature and that's acceptable. When anyone else gets something wrong at work that excuse is not acceptable. Weathermen have the best job security in the world as far as being wrong in their jobs.

Just because someone is certified in a certain field, doesn’t mean they have all of the answers. This goes for all professions. The difference is, they have more knowledge and experience to come to a more educated opinion than those not in the field.

I’ll give you an example that’s currently trending on TD. Thread title says UK mad that China has 40 times the number... If you read into it, they said 15 to 40. In this case a poster, not the media, grabs the most sensational number - 40! This is also what the media does.

It’s not necessarily the expert who is wrong; but the media that filters the expert. Same is true for global warming and corona virus. By reading the media we get the impression that scientists are predicting one thing when actually that thing is the far limit of what they are saying is possible.

Not with me; physicians operate in the front lines and have an immediate but incomplete view.

Talk to an epidemiologist to get a better view.

They are under immense pressure to lowball the situation so people don’t panic and go Lord of the Flies. This is slowly morphing into a dystopian nightmare.

I think you have grabbed a piece of something.

The clickbait media has elevated every headline to a level that would make PT Barnum blush. Every story on the moronic Fox, CNN and MSNBC is treated like a story where the Russian missiles were fired and told like Bob Costas calling the bottom of the 9th in a tied World Series games. As Aldous Huxley predicted, there will be need to hide the truth because it will get lost in the noise.

I took those terms to be hyperbole and not literal quotes.
