Yes - electricity and water hogs, with minimal to no long term job creation.

If for some reason they shut down the data center, at worse we will be left with practically free power plants that we can use to sell power to the grid.

Define free for those power plants.

Maybe, maybe not.

But I wouldn't listen to a socialist from Vermont. What the frick does Vermont produce beside maple syrup and fringe leftists?

Nothings free. These generators, no matter what type, will be owned by banks and investors.

Rarely are large developments in any form 'good' for the community. 'The market' based behavior of large corporations will ALWAYS be two or three steps ahead of 'the government' (be it federal, state, or local). Thus, more than likely the community will usually be on the short end of the stick!

If it increases property taxes for the bad neighborhoods nearby where they can't pay them, lose their homes, and have to move, that's a win.

What yall think
I cringe to admit this, but Bernie might have a point about the extremely high use of electrical energy resources and the effect on the rest of us who also need electricity in that region.
My customary view of any comment from BS is just that - BS.

I don't how it would lead to cost for other users? Are not the data centers going to be paying for the power they use? If they are given some sweetheart deal where they don't pay for their power, like we do with tax credits to incentivize corporations coming to an area I get it and would agree they are going to cost folks a lot in terms of energy cost.

If they are paying for their power then so what! It would make sense they're going to be paying a lot and it may be that we have to build new power plants, probably not a bad thing in the long run anyways. But the cost of the power they are paying for seems like it would be returned to the company in profits who could then build new plants and improve existing infrastructure etc.

Again, if we giving them some discount or they are offloading the cost to the locals I get it but for now, it seems this issues is just another one that crazy people have been latching onto.

Probably. By the time you factor in tax breaks and resources, they dont create a lot of jobs for the resources they use.

Commercial PPAs are break even at best. Retail is where they make up the gap.

That one’s even worse because it’s a double super top secret deal that the PUC made. So yeah, it means they’re probably not paying shite.

Then it looks like Bernie is right...as shitty as it is to say that. frick him and socialism but esp frick socialism in the form of some sweetheart deal from a conservative state that is hidden to keep people from seeing how screwed they may be.

People in bad neighborhoods get government help.

Its the middle class who will feel the pain.
