In the end they are probably a positive depending on how you define local.
No doubt there are a lot of eggs that have to be broken to get the omelet.

look at what they bring to the table, total game changer

Yes.
Their electricity and water consumption is insane.
Make these companies build their own power plants and figure out how to cool them without excess water usage and Scruffy is all on board.

All I know is unicorn farts aren't going to power these data centers. Can't be "green" and have the energy suck of data centers.
Maybe the drive for these centers will welcome in more serious energy production.

They’re going to consume a lot of water and power. If you don’t have an abundance of those then it’ll be bad.

The guys on All In talked about this. It depends on the locale. If the local/state government doesn’t negotiate with the tech firms to pay a higher rate for energy, then yes it can be. In areas where it’s negotiated, rates go down for the residents.

What is the water consumption part? Do they do some sort of once through cooling and not value a closed system?

So Meta is going to spend 12 billion dollars but wants our good citizens to pay for the electricity and water.
If for some reason they shut down the data center, at worse we will be left with practically free power plants that we can use to sell power to the grid.
But the liberal loonies want to spin that, stating we will be on the hook for power plants. Like they would just sit there idle.

quote:In order to use a closed loop system, they would have to cool the water, which is likely highly cost prohibitive, so, no, they are “once through”, most likely.
Do they do some sort of once through cooling and not value a closed system?
Saves money…consumes resources.

A lot of it comes from evaporative cooling systems. Then there’s some secondary indirect from the power gen units.

This should be the way forwardm

Yes. The electricity requirements overload the system which requires more electric buildout leading to higher consumer costs.

Sure you can. That's 100% the long term plan as well.

What js the projected timeline of said plan?
When can a town’s citizens expect the water and electricity cost increases to decline?

It depends on whether or not you pay a lot of money in property taxes. If you live in a podunk place and have a lot of property, it can put a serious dent in your property taxes.

There seems to be a lot of them already but never heard complaints until the Richland and proposed Shreveport ones. I really haven't formed an opinion yet. It sounds really bad but the truth usually lies between two extremes.
