I'll admit I didn't click your link, but I read half your post.
The answer is money.
People will seem robotic because they are doing the minimum to not get fired without rocking the boat.
The leaders keep the employees in the dark about the well being of the company because they do not want them to leave while they still need them.

Some companies/corporations are a LOT like cults.
I worked for one a guy started over his kitchen table and built into a multi-national privately held corp.. He held annual benefit events for the entire corp. all together. One year rented a couple 747's, flew all out to Vegas with 1 guest each, everyone got $1k cash as exiting plane. Another year was a an entire cruise ship rented out for just the company. He officiated a couple weddings on that trip. The next year he had reserved an entire Amtrak but got busted before the trip could take place.
Yeah the corp. got into fraud and stuff due to overwhelming greed. When the S&P rating on the corp. went to the lowest possible and they had to default on billions of loans and bonds, the company folded.
Who were the 4000 employees mad at? The regulators, not the crooks running the company. They were loyal to the leaders they blindly followed and dedicated/tied their self worth and self identity to. The same main guy who allowed his childhood best friend to spend 3 years in Club Fed rather than confess and spare his "friend".
Reminds me a lot of some of those publicized Mormon Cults and Tony Alamo types.

I love America and voted to make it great again but it's just something I noticed one time. It's not America specific but any large gathering where the crowd is all doing the same thing. The pledge is just an easy example

The difference between a corporation and a cult is that one pays you to be there and the other one expects you to pay them.

I think most corporations walk the line between wanting to make employees happy and get the most out of them.
By this they come off as cheesy, with terms like "teamwork" , "synergy", etc.
