Are companies like “23 & Me” a scam?

I keep hearing ads on this during radio shows and have to wonder. This particular one says it will tell me what my genetics do. So like my “mosquito bite frequency” and if I get motion sickness.

Why would anyone need to send a spit sample into a website to tell them shite they already know?

Only for criminals with a past to hide and a desire to know where they came from.

Another way for a company *cough* government to obtain and store your DNA for future use!

No, definitely not a scam

YOu get an amazingly large amount of information generated from a high tech process for a small fee of 100 bucks.

I did it 9 years ago. Best 100 bucks i've spent. I am still going back and getting updates and finding new family.

I’m not worried so much about the government getting my DNA (I have nothing to hide)

It’s really more baffling to me that I have to send in a vile of spit to tell me that I have motion sickness...which I already know

You mean what they already assume?

I did the Ancestry one along with other relatives (who I didn't know did it). When I got my results back it linked us together showing "this person is likely your 1st - 3rd cousin". One of my aunts did it and it show that "there is a 99% chance this person is your mother's sister".

My mom's side of the family thought they had native indian in them (not sure why), but everyone from that side of the family who did it.. Had no trace of native american in them..

I got some roots that trace back to the middle east and north Africa.

you act like this is the only information you received. Did you not learn something about your genetics and ancestry?

If you already know there is a genetic link for you, why would send them anything?

If you only know that you seem to be more prone but wonder if genetics may impact that, then you send them your spit. Some of us find that interesting enough to pay a small fee for that and our genetic background.

Perhaps you could find out if genetics drive your crappy posting skills.

I kid.

If you call a company created with seed money from the government to con people into sending them their DNA samples a scam then yes. If not and you have no problem having your DNA shared with God knows who then no.

Cause they thought there were benefits if they claimed Injun, just like Elizabeth Warren?

I only did the ancestry portion. The health report is separate and knowing all the diseases I'm prone to would make me paranoid.
