It’s shocking how many 10+ year olds in our neighborhood can’t ride a bike.
---
I am insisting my 8 and 10 year grandsons learn to ride. Their Dad doesn't seem to care.
I confiscated the bikes from their house and have them here now.

I saw that they also make GT but not sure the quality of them compared to back in the day
They have been bought and sold a few times over the years and although they are back to being a stand alone company based in Southern Cal, they are still owned by a holding company so quality probably isn't what it used to be.

My FIL has owned a bike shop in Houma since the 80’s. Sales of BMX bikes are down over 75% since about 10 years ago. Just look around neighborhoods and you don’t see many kids riding around in packs like we did in the 80’s. They are inside playing video games or the latest trend is electric bikes. I remember in the mid ‘90’s he would have a couple hundred BMX bikes on layaway….it was insane. That was back when Mongoose and some of the big names didn’t sell out to big box stores. Now even brands like Haro are selling direct to consumer, so there won’t be many mom and pop stores in the future.

I didn't have the best bicycle in the mid seventies, but the XR75 made up for it.

Yep then a mongoose eventually , good times, then I got my license and left in my back yard to rust wish I still had it.
…
Edit to say I’ll see old ones for sale on marketplace for $1k or more sometimes

Man, my chrome diamondback got stolen out my garage 2 minutes after i put it in there. I went in to take a leak, drank some water, and it was gone.
I was too naive as a kid to know it, but somebody was definitely scoping me out.

I had a Haro racer and that bike was so awesome. Put my Mongoose with the skinny tires to shame at how well the gears and brakes worked

Used to ride this exact Diamondback Viper. Damn those were good times.

Redline
4 pegs
Rotor on steering wheel
Metal valve covers
Gel seat
Speedometer
My bike was my baby. Then someone stole it from my garage. Devastated.

Check out:
Daylight, Rift, Chase, Supercross, syndyt. Some of these bikes can run upwards of 5k.
My kid races and we just came back from Tulsa, OK Grand Nationals and Race of Champions. There were over 6,000 kids from all over the place that were there to race. Check out USA BMX’s website for more info.

Bought my kids one for Christmas 2 years ago, a Mongoose and a Redline. Both quality bikes and they out some miles on them over the years. Most of the other neighborhood kids roll around in golf carts and e bikes or dirt bikes.

There is a BMX track in Gretna, in the 10 years I have been on the Westbank i can count the number of times I've seen it ridden on using no fingers, it stays vacant and covered with tarps
The Gretna track is open on Tuesdays, Fridays and think now on Sundays. They have a Facebook page with weekly updates. It's also ran by volunteers which is why it isn't open more often. It's a really good track.
