The vast majority of people don’t understand what it means to “total” a vehicle.
Just because a vehicle is totaled does not mean that it’s unrepairable, it simply means that it’s more cost effective for the insurance company to cut a check to the policy holder and then sell the vehicle at a salvage auction.
So many vehicles are totaled nowadays for reasons that simply make no sense. If there isn’t frame or chassis damage, or extreme damage to the electrical system, then the vehicle can 100% be repaired.

Cars are designed to crunch on collision. That way the car absorbs the shock, not you. If your car was built like a tank, you would feel it a lot more. Think of the egg experiment. Is it better to have the egg in a tin can or something with some give?

The energy of the impact can either get absorbed by crushing the sacrificial parts of a modern sedan or it can be transferred right into your spine like it did when cars were “tanks”. Which would you prefer?

Please admit that you were posting here when you wrecked

Uni-body vehicles (most cars and light SUVs) have crush zones or the ability to absorb crash energy and divert it around the passenger compartment up to a certain point obviously.
So if the SUV was a full body on frame and your car was a uni-body that's the desired result. It might have stopped you from getting hurt.

I had a guy in a brand new Colorado run into the back of my 04 2500hd going 40 at a stoplight. Hit me so hard, it knocked me into the lady in front of me, and her into the guy in front of her. The Colorado's front end was completely smashed in, windows shattered, hood folded up like a taco, fenders bent outwards, and the driver's side A-pillar was bent in, so he couldn't get out on that side.
When I got pushed into the lady in front of me in a newer CRV, I smashed in the whole back gate and bumper of her car. Her front bumper crumpled into the guy in front of her, and his rear bumper was hanging on the ground.
Only damage I had was a dented tailgate from the Colorado's hood hitting it, and a dent in the rear bumper that I didn't see until I got back home. I took the insurance check, had someone paint me a new tailgate, and bought an aftermarket bumper with the leftover cash. No downtime

Are all sedans unsafe?
It's not the sedan.. It's you.

Long story short, I rear ended some car on Saturday and his suv barely had any damage and my front end looks pretty bad. When I bought the car, the part that was important was the 5* safety rating. Is all sedans rating bs? Should I just get a suv?
Side note what’s a good safe reliable suv under 20?
You're on here posting after an accident, which indicates little to no personal injury, which means the car did it's job as far as protecting you from injury.
If you're too stupid to understand that a large SUV will sustain less damage than a smaller sedan in an accident, that's not the car's fault..

The damage looks bad because of the safety in the vehicle.
It collapses so the impact goes around the frame and not directly into the occupants

THat sounds like reasonable thinking.

Were you hurt? If not, sounds like a bad driver like you made a smart decision buying a car with a 5* safety rating.

Safety has nothing to do with what your vehicle looks like after a crash.
You were in an accident. You weren’t hurt. What exactly what make you think the 5 star was wrong.

Not impossible if you're ok with getting something used.

Go look at some crash photos from the 30's and 40's when cars were built like tanks. Barely a dent in the fender and the wreck is a fatality.
Unless you're talking about the steering column-turned-spear, how could this happen?

FYI
One thing deceiving about safety raiting is that they are rated in their class. So a 5 star compact might be "less safe" than a 3 star SUV

I believe Volvo set a goal of not having a single serious injury in any of their cars after 2020. So basically, you could wreck a S40 into an 18 wheeler going 100, and come out alright

Back then steering wheels were not collapsible so hitting them
Was bad news.
No seat belts so you flew all around hitting the steel columns inside the car.
No headrest so snapped necks happened.
In the case of Bonnie and Clyde, they died of lead poisoning in a car of that period.
