The one and only time I was in a DG there was a worker at the register and three other workers in the store doing nothing. Then all of a sudden the three catch a women shop lifting. All hell broke loose. The three were making such a racket that I thought there was a riot. They ended up kicking the women out the door forcefully..

They have horrible business practices toward their employees. They are expected to run the registers and stock the shelves. The stuff is delivered and just clogs the isles until the employee expected to run the register gets it on the shelf.
They treat their vendors no better. They have a price point and demand product that is brand equivalent and meets the price point. If the can or tube is underfilled (Compared to national brand), they don't care (Let the customer beware). When they open a new store, they expect their vendors to stock it for free (no charge). The vendor's profits must come from resale stocking when their product is sold.
The people who accept employment will always be desperate for a job and almost always regret their decision to work for the company. Many vendors refuse to even quote product to Dollar General. Oh, They are not very good about paying their vendors in a timely manner either and their inventory level reporting to their vendors sucks big time, resulting in a never ending demand for relief of out of stock conditions in their warehouses.

My local one always has plenty of staff. The woman manager runs the place very well

Yes. That is the business model they use. Pretty interesting model...they are all exactly the same, no bathrooms, video security, strategically located and minimum employees.

Can't keep prices that low if you double your personnel expenses.
