Looking to see about how much it would cost to add on to an existing house. The house is currently 994sqft and would be interested in adding probably another 1000 or so square feet. It has an open gable roof so it looks like it would be easy to add on to one side and extend the roof. Just curious about what price per sq I wold be looking at. This is in Livingston Parish btw.

Inb4 about three fifty.

How much did your house cost? I would say that much since you want to add that much space

So you want to build an addition thats bigger than your current sq?

What's keeping you in the house instead of buying a new place that is updated and probably more energy efficient?

If paid off on a large amount of land I could understand, but idk about this for many reasons.

What's your neighborhood like? Age of house currently?

This is a place we are looking at buying. It’s just due to location that we are even exploring. It’s a 2bed 1 bath. Obviously not big enough for a family of 4 but in just about the perfect location for us.

the first thing you need to look at is the property values for your neighborhood and determine whether it would make more financial sense to add on or to move

That's what I was thinking.

Doubling the size of an existing house? That seems monumental. What are the sizes of the neighboring houses?
your costs will be high and I'm not sure you'll ever get that cost back out of it when you sell.

I take it your house is approx. 40 x 25. Further, I assume the gable end is the 25 foot length. If you were to double the size, your house becomes 80 x 25. That's a strange layout for a 2000 sq. ft. house.

He'd be better off building a badass garage with an up stairs finished with rooms. Connect hallway to house, problem solved.

It’s more square than that. I’m thinking approx 30x30. Its in the school district we want to be in and pretty close to her parents, and they keep our kids a lot after schools and stuff. No one is selling in the area bc it’s the only area of the city that didn’t flood

Remodel is more expensive than new construction per foot. You have to demo some before you can build.

adding onto a house that will nearly double your square foot..might as well figure all of the cost of building a new house then the cost to adjoin. Livingston Parish.. $120/SF for the new then probably another 20-40K to adjoin the two with out seeing the complexities of it.. Probably better off in long run tearing it down and starting new ground up.

If it’s in an acre move it to the side for guest quarters and live in it while you build.

This. Depending on your attic space, you could also put a room up there with dormer windows.

OP, all those are my up votes.

If this is to become your final ever home, spend the money if the hood is good. But, do take a look around that hood and picture yourself 20 years down the road. I saw hoods that were great and I saw hoods that people lost their asses.

Figure no less then $100 per SF. That can go up or down $20.
