Part 1 - I think that part of the reason that we are having a labor shortage is that fact that we have done away basically with the apply in person and fill out an application. It used to be so easy...

Now a days just to apply for a job you have to sign up on a companies' website, create an account with password, provide emails and start doing questionnaires etc. etc. etc.

I did this to help my GF search for a job at places like Loves, Lowes, Home depot and let me tell you. It's a time consuming pain in the arse.

Yes if you need a job you will do all this, But I do firmly beleive that if things were simplified like back in the day where you could just walk in, fill out an app and talk to someone that would help relieve some of this labor shortage...

Oh.. jusy FYI. The weather was so nice this weekend that 15 people called in sick at my local Lowes.

Part 2 - I need to place ads regularly for help.. But my ads are for easy gigs like Waitress, bartender, DJ and Door staff... We want to get people through the front door, meet them and most times just put them to work because it's pretty simple. I mean how much training do you need to have to be a waitress in a Bar? "Sir, can I get you a beer?" That's basically about it...

I place ads mostly on Facebook and Craigslist. I guess because newspapers are a thing of the past. And every single ad says the same thing. "APPLY IN PERSON" No Calls.. Please "APPLY IN PERSON"

and what happens every time... Nobody will walk through the door to apply, but yet I will get 25 to 30 people email me with an attached resume' that wants me to call them.

My first thought is: "If you cannot follow the first instruction of APPLY IN PERSON, then I already know that you either do not follow instructions or you do not take the time to follow through to detail."

And then I also get a lot of "Call Me" or "Message Me"

This immediately irritates me to know end. I don't need a job, you are the one that is trying "supposedly) to apply for a job, why should I call You, when my ad says specifically "APPLY IN PERSON"

Happy Monday good folks.

IT's wayyyyyyy less time consuming to apply to a job online than it is to drive to a physical location to apply.

This is a Boomer take

It's far easier to use online job boards like Indeed than to apply for jobs in person at each individual location.

The wild thing to me is that companies are interviewing and then hiring employees 100% virtually now, people are getting jobs without ever meeting anyone from that company in person.

I'm one of those people

It's the flip side. If you need someone so badly, you cater to them. They're not your puppets to do whatever you want, they don't even work for you. You want competent people who can do the job, you go find them, not the other way around where you hope they find you after you inconvenience them.

I’m not even sure big box stores will accept applications in person anymore. It’s all funneled through their online portals directly to HR.

Yep, and some companies are going fully remote and people are freaking out about that without realizing they're increasing the talent pool from a tiny 20 mile or so radius around a physical headquarters to the entire nation.

I helped sort through resumes at my previous job because we got about 300 the first day. If you didn't take the time to submit a cover letter or answer the pre-interview call in questions I just deleted the resume since it was asked that you do both of those things. People's laziness amazes me, and I'm admittedly a very lazy person. But if you can't follow the instructions to apply for a job then you don't need to be hired.

It is a hassle for sure, but it's also a hassle to get dressed and be presentable to just walk into an "apply now" establishment that is run like a shite show.

I had my years of searching for the "now hiring" and "apply inside" jobs. They are typically not quality positions run by people who think they possess superior judgement. I'd rather go through an hour long process for a solid company.

It is a pain in the arse, though. But so is hunting your food, killing it, cleaning it, and eating it before it spoils. Some things are inherently not easy.

Then make it just fill out an online app... and not creating accounts, user passwords, Login ID's etc on companies websites....

I could have driven the 2 miles to Lowes and filled out an APP, spoke to someone and been back home by the time that it took me to do an online APP, User login, create account etc on Lowes website.

There's supposedly twice as many open positions right now as people in the workforce so the shoe is now on the other foot.

Especially in the hospitality and retail industries.

Applying in person wouldn’t be a big deal if everyone was doing it. But it’s a pain in the neck to be applying for jobs and find that one that wants you to apply in person when back in the old days, you could get in your car and hit up 15 places at once.

Depends on the job and industry. My wife does data analytics type stuff. Her last two in-person interviews took less time than it did to fill out the application(s). Some of the hoops to jump through are silly. Creating an online profile, taking personality tests & experience questionnaires, etc.

Same. I put my resume on Indeed just to see what happened because we were wanting to move out of Louisiana. Had a company contact me asking if I wanted to interview for their job opening. I didn't get hired the first time, but stayed in touch and they hired me 8 months later when they needed more help. One interview with my direct boss over the phone, and then one Skype interview with the owner and his wife while they were vacationing in Mexico. Never filled out an application, had a background check or anything. Very, very trusting on their part.

I've only met everyone one time when I had to fly to SLC for a Christmas lunch. They literally paid to fly me from Knoxville to SLC to eat lunch at Flemings with everyone and then flew me home the next day. I would have rather pocketed the cost of the ticket and hotel room, but whatever.

Online applications just get lost in the void.

My boomer take is if you actually want the job, to go drop off the resume in person. Try to get a name+email in HR from the front desk too.

Doesnt work as well for mega corps but local businesses you might have a shot.

All this tells me is you're not good with computers.

You can create an account in less than 2 minutes.

Seems to be causing a lot of labor law issues here in the early going.

My company is fully remote but we only hire employees who reside in our state to combat any potential issues.

Right on... How much more local than a neighborhood bar?

Exactly this, the OP has not adapted with the times. If you want an entry level job, there's a lot to choose from. The OP needs to realize this.

These aren't highly specialized positions like the OP has said, it's bartenders and server positions. So I see this "apply in person" and I can either go through the hassle of doing that, or I find any one of a dozen similar jobs that I can apply to online from the comfort of my home very easily. It's not a tough call.
