Your paraphrase here isn't exactly what you said before.
Asking apple to break their encryption which they developed is completely different than exploiting a huge whole in the security measures of older iphones. Security measures does not equal encryption.
That's exactly what I said before...
And Apple didn't "write" any encryption. Deffie-Helman did that in the 70s. Apple coded their OS to utilize encryption standards.

Just out of curiosity, if the FBI programmers write it and just ask apple to sign it, is that better?
I understand that this likely can't happen because of IP, but just curious if that is what upsets you the most.
You've obviously never worked with the FBI tech units, I have. I can promise you they don't have the resources to just whip up an iOS exploit.

They take issue with handing over a dead murder's information? This seems like a bad time to a stand.
This makes it the perfect time to take a stand.
Same way it's the perfect time to stand up for free speech when the speech in question is extremely unpopular.
Rights are there to protect what everyone agrees on. They are there to protect the things that almost no one agrees with. That's the whole point of rights.

The link above says Apple is being asked to help bypass a potential auto-erase application that would allow the FBI to hack the login screen with brute force attempts. That seems to be a far cry from installing a backdoor on the iOS of all phones out of the box, no?
I'm so sick of this issue. So, even if it's this, you don't see that disabling the auto-erase and unleashing that in the world as the biggest hacker target of all time, leading hackers to get a copy of iOS without this feature, allowing ANYONE to brute force it like the FBI wants to do as a bad thing?

I think the feds have the resources to get what they want done.
Also, I said I realize it is unlikely.
believe what you want...
at this point in time the private sector infosec community is far more skilled than what the feds have. they are working to change this for obvious reasons.

you mean setting a couple booleans to false?

the only thing they need is apples signature to upload the package

what difference does it make how simple the code modification is?

when a "hacker" could already do it and probably moderate level coder . oh and the FBI tech division.

then why are they stuck unless apple writes the exploit?

They are stuck because they need Apple's signature. They are stuck from a coding standpoint.
They are also stuck from a legal standpoint, i.e., IP law
so you really think the FBI has an exploit ready to go they just want Apple's "signature"?
yea ok...
lotta people in this thread think they know what they are talking about and dont have a clue...

Did anyone read the Apple letter?
The Feds want another version of IOS WITHOUT the self-destruct feature (multiple incorrect passwords locks phone) so the feds can try a billion password combinations to get into the phone.
On the surface, this is easy enough, but when this IOS (which is signed by Apple and can be added to ANY iphone) gets into the wild and easily downloaded, then is used to get your personal information when you leave your phone in a cab you will be singing another tune.
It's not about helping the feds on THIS case, it's about security for ALL iphone users.
