He had to choose between a country (and an army) he loved, and his state, his family and his home.
If you can't get past that basic complexity and reduce it just to "treason" - we lose the teaching opportunity these situations present.
It was very complicated. It was a very complicated time. The issues were not, pardon the pun, black and white.

If any of those monuments are removed I will never spend another penny in that city.

While we're removing the "trash" from New Orleans, can we remove roughly 2/3 of its citizens as well?

Do those statues coming down make you feel safer?

Here I am. Gave you a down vote.

Keeping it is trashy. The general, Great War general. Trashy patriot for committing treason against the USA. I'd be damn though, let's honor a Treasonist! So unamerican of its supporters
He didn't commit treason. He supported his State's right to secede - an issue that has never been legally settled.
You should read up on the post war actions of Jefferson Davis. He was practically pleading to be brought to trial. He wanted to be tried, because then the government would have to show that a State didn't have the right to secede. It is quite likely that the Supreme Court at the time would've sided on the side of State's rights. That's why he and anyone else of note were pardoned... the yanks were scared to death to bring the matter to court.

What a miserable frick. I don't even care about the statues, but something about you just disgusts me.

It's going to happen sooner rather than later. Get ready for it. Demographics are not on the side of the white, southern confederate cracker in that city.

They may get Lee, but you miserable SOBs go after Jackson and you'll have some fun. I can't wait to sit back and watch from afar.

Why aren't they taking down Jackson Square?? He owned slaves
I don't see them tearing down the pyramids and they were built by slaves.
Fun fact...much of the ancient world was built by slaves, of every hue.

Get over it
Move on, stop living in the past
No one living today had anything to do with the civil war

Lynchings continued well into the 1940s and 50s.
Emmet Till
Medgar Evars
Those little girls in that church in Birmingham would be my mothers age if they were still alive.
That type of racial hatred is hardly a generation removed from present day America.
I also find it amusing when people say that " let it go, move on" bullshite. However it's perfectly fine to be swept up in delusions of granduer in regards to the "Southern Heritage" as a result of losing the Civil War

Get over it. It's in the past

Time to remove all of Jackson square then. Slaves were hanged and beheaded there. Just remove the whole damn thing. frick it. Remove the whole city because in one point in time segregation existed.

well at least all the black people will stop killing each other now that the monuments are down

Ehhhh... you could certainly say that they were the product of slave labor - it was slaves that allowed for the free time to work on the pyramids; however, they were holy sites and slaves weren't actually allowed to work on them.

Dude we are in America. Stop that illogical and baseless shitty game racist sympathizers play where they justify their shittiness on the grounds that someone else was just as shitty.
It's literally the logic of a child

Ok nobody bit your first hook so I'll bite this one
Nobody is wanting to 'honor' anyone.. I don't even think this is about the fricking statue.. people are just tired of always giving in to this select group of slapdicks all the time. Some folks are getting tired of the 'I don't want to hurt someone's feelings' bullshite
It's not even about the statue itself.. this is fricking asinine
