I doubt the tests are hard, will your company pay for the certs? If so, get them all.

I have 510, 570, 653, and CWI. If you want TA work you will need your API's. CWI will get you project work or in house QA/QC and API's will get you in house inspection work if that is the route you choose. Pay difference in $10-$15 per hour in wages. I've done the TA circuit, project work, and in house work. In house stability is the best bang for the buck I've found without having to kill myself on a daily basis. Hope this helps...

That's exactly what I'm looking for. In house work with occasional TA here and there. I'm tired of road work. My 5 year experience in the field will hit next August. So I can take 570 in October.

Best friend is 510 certified. Brother is 510 certified. Took him three times to pass it even with 15 years experience. They earned it through years of welding, then became CWI. Very important job from what I gather. Great money and people with the 510 are somewhat part of a brotherhood, for lack of better words.

I been having my CWI for about four years now. I took the five day prep course and passed it, but I worked for one of the largest offshore fabricators on the Gulf coast and was in the code book almost everyday. If you do not have much experience with the code, I suggest taking a prep course without taking the test. Study the things you learn especially the code book section that is what most people fail. Once you feel comfortable and feel like you are ready, take another prep course and then take the test.

For CWI I recommend taking it with Real Education Services. Gerald and Lynda Taylor are good friends and really good at what they do.

I traveled to Oklahoma and took Mark Smith last May for my 510 and passed. Great guy and a great class IMO. Even though the tests are now computer based, he still teaches with paper based codes.

Plan on going back to him for My 653. I've also seen he now has classes in Gonzales.

I have 570/510. I took a class in Texas for a week then took the test and passed.
