Do any of you guys have an API 510 or 570 certification or maybe a CWI? If so, how long did you study and were the test as difficult as they say they are? Planning on taking API 510 next October.

I'd go with the JRQ620. Far superior to the 336FB or the 476LN

API should not be studied, it should be understood and implemented

Certified welding inspector? Think you gotta weld for awhile, but I'm not a hundred percent sure.

Not necessarily. You don't have to have actually ever welded in your life to become a CWI. As long as you have 5 years experience in the inspection field.

Yeah, you try and tell an experienced welder that his fillet needs some touch up with no welding on your resume. That dude will bitch slap you until you cry. Why don't you try and do something else, you seem to want to take short cuts in life.

I work in the field, but I don't hold any certs. We have inspectors. I take the data and create certification reports...I do the calcs and any API579 remaining life analyses, but we have unique clients with non-Code vessels.

I have to reference 510 and 570 often when discussing nonconformances, but also the CFR, AGA, build Codes...you name it.

I'm developing stress calcs right now from pre-Code text books...which is interesting because discontinuity stresses are a bitch.

API 510 is the one required for offshore work. I've looked over a lot of Appendix C type of documents and have never seen one adequately filled out the first time. I'm sure CWI is a good standard, but if you're doing this for work related purposes, go with API 510 (9th edition) as it is an incorporated document in 30 CFR 250.

X-ray? That's adorable, next you'll pull out your ultrasound machine and say you're a structural engineer.

Look, you obviously couldn't tack weld your foreskin to your boyfriend's lip, and you wanna inspect grown men's work? Doesn't work like that kid. Do some real work and learn some real shite, then you can have a real job

At least up here CWI is required for all special inspections regarding structural steel welds.

Comical. You obviously don't know the amount of money is in play being a call out xray/shearwave hand.

That's cute.

I gotcha. I've been a road call out for a few years now. I'm trying to get off the road and settle somewhere in house in one of the refineries near Laplace, Belle Chase area as an inspector

My dad was a CWI for Jacobs and my godfather was a CWI for BP. Both transitioned into an Inspection Coordinators role for both companies. Don't settle at CWI.

Both men told me when i was in highschool that I didn't need to know a lick of welding to take my CWI....they told me this as i pestered them to teach me to weld.

There are classes out there for a week or 2 that go over the test material. Take them, study, pass

Took code west classes and then test. Not bad. These days the test are on computers at local testing facilities.

For welding codes/standards:

ASME Section IX
-Used for facility piping and Pressure Vessels (B31.3, B31.1 and ASME VIII)

API 1104
-Used for pipeline construction (B31.4 and B31.8)

AWS D1.1
-Used for building and construction industry. Referenced by ASME and API.

....From my notes of good references and standards.

I know several CWIs who can't put a rod in a holder. You don't have to be a welder to be a CWI.

You don't have to Weld to be a CWI! If that's the case than every welder should be and inspector before welding..
