Plenty of colder states have renewables and windmills. They winterize things.

Texas didn’t see a need to protect any of the energy infrastructure - but no one expected a 100 year winter event. It’s not a green or non green issue.

Name the states and how many get 25% of their power from those sources?

Do the part where you take that 25% (it’s not 25% btw) and break it down to nameplate gen, expected max production, restricted production, and planned consumption. I’ll wait for your expert analysis.

It’s about 22%. Not sure how that equates to megawatts but 18,000 megawatts from renewables are out.

I don't know about any of that, but maybe you can break it down for me, since you're clearly trying to imply your own superiority on the subject. I have no idea how that's relevant to this discussion in terms of wind turbine operations during extreme weather events.

As I've said before "winterizing" wind turbines doesn't alter their efficiency in a good way. It merely ensures the efficiency doesn't decrease in extreme cold weather events, which are few and far between in Texas.

From max output that’s about right but they were only planned for about half of that. From the other sources that were supposed to be available, as in not in planned maintenance, we lost about 20k from NG, 4k from coal, and 2k from nuke.

And my point is. They all fricked up.

I probably took your comment the wrong way because I haven't been sleeping much between calls from wind and solar developers i worked with in the past, my day job trying to keep NG going to peoples houses and arguing with dumbasses who want to quote Abbott for the past 3 days.

I've been asked by every developer I've worked with in the past about how the winterizing impacts the units and its basically just a money decision. It'll be interesting to see who decides to make the investment for something that hasn't happened before in the area.

Anyone heard why that nuke reactor went offline? That's the only one I haven't heard about yet.

Actually it is. Green sources need more winterizing than fossil fuel sources. This just further adds to cost difference and reliability difference between them.

after investigation, there was no issue but stayed offline for safety's sake

Winterizing is putting heaters in the blades so they don’t freeze. The elements are powered by the turbine. This causes a loss in efficiency of the turbine. These heaters can use between 20-30% of the turbines generation during icing events. Consider that turbines are only about 60% efficient to begin with, then you are seriously degrading the output by putting de-icing elements in the blades. That’s why Texas doesn’t do it.

biggest problem is we do not insulate our natural gas pipelines ( industry lines)...the gas contains fluids (frak moister etc)...this with the extreme cold is causing big problems in our gas movement to the generators...fluids freezing in pipelines
