Serious question - would a crew cab Chevrolet 1500 w/ a bed cover not have done the same thing?
Does the Silverado Crew Cab have an 8' bed?
If so, it's too long to fit in a normal garage...so no.

So you're only looking at the posts that agree with you. Cool.

Not if he wanted to move sheets of plywood or sheet rock flat in the bed.
I really didn't know the answer. Thanks for the info.

quote:No I'm asking for clarification. You said "most" of the posts disagree with me and I just don't see it. There's some on both sides and also a mixture of up and down votes. Seems like a decent topic all things considered.

It's not much of a difference. Like I said, it was definitely a niche vehicle.

You think that new truck has an aluminum body/bed now?
They've had aluminum parts for a while, including the hood and some body panels. The newer Chevrolet, Buick, and Cadillac products have all lost a lot of weight (I think the Cadillac CT6 is about 900 lbs lighter than the BMW 750i and also lighter than the smaller 5 series).
The Silverado was never the heaviest of the competitors, but there is always that government pressure to increase fuel economy. So they will probably use more composites and aluminum.

The new ones look like one of those utility mini-trucks with a crew cab.

So you have a reading issue. Cool. H2, Escalade EXT, wife that doesn't frick cook clean, Envoy XUV. All things that don't agree with you, and make up most of the posts in this thread besides you and I going back and forth.

Anything more useless than a Chevy Avalanche? by The Mick

I hope to put 250k miles on it.
Saw a friend of mine this past weekend, 2006 Avalanche with 358,000 miles and he swears it still running like a top.

The mid gate feature that expanded the bed into the back seat was kind of neat. It was ideal for an ATV or snow mobile, or hauling sheets of plywood. It gave you the functionality of an 8' truck bed, but without the 20+ foot length.
The thing is that most people who have Tahoes and Silverados also have utility trailers of some kind to haul the larger items.

You're right about that.
Fords were always the heaviest for some reason.
(That dumb ad about dropping the blocks in the bed still aggravates me)

I've got just shy of 200k on my 04. Those 5.3L V8s are great.

That's a bingo. It's on a minivan chassis that can't be used off road. It can't tow anywhere near as much as a Silverado or F150, but it gets the same crappy gas mileage.

I think they used fully boxed frames after the 1997-2003 models posted embarrassingly bad crash tests. That increased the weight a bit.
1997-2003 F150 Poor Crash Test
But on the bright side, it improved their crash test performance for the 2004-2014 model trucks.
Then they shite the bed again in 2015. They unfortunately got caught leaving some structural parts out of the 2015 model trucks that they didn't anticipate would be tested. They have since decided to add the framing back in, which increases their weight.

New test shows disparities in Ford F-150 crash protection
After a highly unusual follow-up crash test, the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety has concluded that Ford Motor Co. “shortchanges” some buyers of its redesigned 2015 F-150 pickups by equipping certain models with protective steel bars while leaving them off others.

Yes there is.
But not a vehicle.
It is a status symbol.
